This was pretty much my experience. For me, I was terrified to try things, thinking I would fail, until all of a sudden, I succeeded at something and got a boost of confidence to try other things. (Some of those I still failed at, but most times I succeeded- I had to apply twice to get into veterinary school, but my other accomplishments gave me the confidence to apply again). The important thing is, don't stop trying because you think it will turn out badly- you're guaranteed to fail that way. I guess, if you don't give yourself a chance to succeed, you never will.
Just remember that loads of totally awesome people go through the same thing, but the ones who give up trying just get stuck being failures for ever, so keep working until you discover your inner awesome!!
It takes patience and a lot of hard work to prove to yourself that you actually are awesome, but if you keep trying, you'll eventually get there (in the case of art, more practice is always better, so even if you look at your work now and think it's terrible, draw 100 more pictures, and you will get better). I have a brother who loves soccer, but wasn't really very good at it. He wanted to play so badly that he worked his butt off for years practicing, and eventually captained his high-school team and became a much better player than more talented kids who stopped improving!
