Hey, awesome writer person! Yeah, that's right, I'm talking to YOU.
You offered to write in one of my fandoms, and for that you rock like a rocking thing holding a rock and then kicking a rock across the parking lot. Who then rocks out some more to the best music ever made. That's right, Jon Bon Fuckin' Jovi.*
Okay, now that that's out of the way, time to get to the nitty-gritty, as the cool kids call it. (Lies. The cool kids never say "nitty-gritty.") Things I like include, but are in no way limited to: fun with POV, fun with linear vs. non-linear storytelling, fun with tone, fun with writing. I really dig character studies, stories that really get into what makes a character tick, and I like relationships that can't work out as much as I like my happy endings. I like doubt, and hope, and theology; I like actors, and directors, and I like the random deity. I like fairy tales. I like interesting turns of phrase, I like the perfect line, I like any story written just for me. If you have any questions about my taste (or lack thereof), feel free to ask
tangleofthorns, who probably knows my fannish tastes better than I do.
Things that I would prefer you not include--especially gratuitously; there are obviously ways to engage with problematic actions/thoughts/etc. in fiction, but there is a very fine line there--are as follows: noncon, necrophilia, pedophilia, incest, non-character driven racism/sexism/[all]isms. I also have a pretty big embarrassment squick (I mean, I've watched The Office, but not comfortably--and often an episode can take more than one sitting for me to work through). I'm also not into AUs in most of these fandoms (the exception being Parks & Rec RPF: details in the fandom-specific section).
That's basically it. I'm not huge on porn-sans-plot-and/or-character development, but I'll read it. I like character names to be spelled correctly. Also other words. But, again, not deal breakers per se.
My request details are in no way required, and I included them mostly to give you an idea of where I am, what I've been thinking about, in relation to the source material. Do not be afraid of the gen. Or the slash. Or the het. I'm good with all three, and I'm way more interested in character development and good writing than, say, Characters X & Y getting it on.
Everybody Hates Chris
Rochelle
First of all, I love this show. This show makes me all kinds of happy. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it--it's on Hulu in its entirety for people who can access that, and it's on DVD and I've seen the odd episode or two floating around on Youtube--if you enjoy smart comedy about family and being a smart kid that's upfront about class and race issues. It just makes me smile. It's so good!
I requested Rochelle because she's my absolute favorite. I'd love something about her and Julius--he has two jobs--whether it's during their courtship or post-show lives or a slice of life moment from during the show that maybe we don't see. Or something about her and Tonya, maybe after Tonya's all grown up, or maybe when she's not. Or just Rochelle being herself, quitting another job, starting another. In short: the show is largely Chris's POV, and I'd love a deeper exploration of what makes Rochelle tick.
Galaxy Quest
Jason Nesmith, Gwen DeMarco, Alexander Dane
This movie does such an amazing job of parodying the best TV sci-fi tropes (and actorly stereotypes) while still loving and celebrating them. Also it's the only movie that could make a Tim Allen character a believable part of an OT3. I love each of these characters on their own--Alexander is so pretentious that even he hates himself for it, but he has a pure heart; Jason is arrogant and drunken and ridiculous but will still go to the ends of the galaxy and get his shirt ripped for justice; Gwen is all things silly and fabulous in spandex and she's smart enough to know it. But honestly, it's the three-way chemistry that's really magic for me.
Intrigue behind the scenes of the original series? Great! Drunken shenanigans during a convention? Bring it! Continued adventures literally anywhere in the universe? Yes, please! Gwen schooling the boys at poker, Alex losing a bet and having to do a terribly embarrassing script, Jason screwing up the space-time continuum and going back over and over to set things right? Any or all of the above! Obviously, I ship it as a threesome, so go as wild as you want, if you take it that way. But friendship, rivalry, or any particular pairing could work just as well, as long as the focus is on the interaction between all three characters. Clearly they can't do without each other.
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
Phryne Fisher, Jack Robinson, Elizabeth MacMillan
So this is the fandom where I'd totally be into PWP-type action if that's your thing. Just FYI. It's also a fandom where I'd devour gen casefic with canon levels of Phryne flirting with everyone and short bantery vignettes and anything and everything with these three characters. Porn! Plot! Romance! Adventure! Tea! Champagne! Dresses! Hats! I just adore this show, and I want all of the fic about it.
I requested these characters because I love them--individually and together. Jack/Phryne Phryne/Mac Poly V would rock my socks off, as would awesome gen friendship fic with canon levels of flirtation. I'd honestly prefer not to get either Jack/Phryne or Phryne/Mac without the poly v aspect--again, canon flirtation levels are great and fic where they just hang out drinking would make me just as happy as anything else.
Parks and Recreation RPF
Amy Poehler, Aubrey Plaza
"We had a moment last year, late at night, when we decided we were gonna end up together. For now, we have to let boys come and go, but we're kind of in love." -Aubrey about Amy.
Look, I'll be honest here: I ship it. I ship the hell out of it. I mean, canonical endgame, am I right? That said, I don't need shippy fic to make me happy here. Give me on set shenanigans! A prank war that leads to Adam Scott crying? I am all there. Give me awards show weirdness! Give me friendship and mentorship and funny ladies being awesome! I will seriously love anything about these women--and cameos from the other Parks & Rec cast members would make my day (Retta--and her love of the LA Kings--makes my heart sing). I'd also be into AUs for this fandom--spies! actresses in space! superheroes!--though not mudane (coffee shops, high school, etc.) ones.
If you do go the femslash route, well, make outs and mornings after and pancakes and sex that's actually fun all float my boat. I'm not big into super melodramatic melodrama (and I'm not coming to Yuletide for serious explorations of homophobia)--though something about family and the awkwardness of new relationships, especially public ones, and compromising and being soppy and grinning and laughter and arguments and just living life would be grand.
See? Nothing scary to see here, I swear! (Except for the part where I basically entirely cribbed entire the non-fandom-specific sections of this letter from last year's letter. And the Bon Jovi reference. Those parts were a little scary, right?)
I mostly just want to thank you in advance. Thank you! For knowing at least one of the fandoms I've requested, for volunteering to write in it, and for being as kick-ass as I know you must be!
*Disclaimer: not actually the best music ever made. Fun to rock out to, though. Whip out the Aqua Net, we're going Jersey style up in here.
