Had a rough day yesterday. A professor that I knew killed himself on Friday and I found out about when I came into work yesterday. He was 47, had just been promoted to an endowed chair, was married with an 11-year-old son, was an expert in his field of mass torts (I knew him because he was our go-to person for BP lawsuit media requests and had set up interviews for him when I was on call). One story that people told about him yesterday was that he knew the students often made fun of his accent, so every year at the end of the year, he gave a prize to the student who could do the best imitation of him ....
He had a bicycle accident about 5 weeks ago and was having some problems from it. At his request, he stopped doing TV interviews, but would still do phone and e-mail interviews. There has been some research into specific types of brain injuries causing depression/suicidal thoughts. So, we're all wondering if that's what happened. Or if some of the damage was permanent and he couldn't stand to be less of himself. We may never know.
But still, to do that to your child ....
So sad and senseless.
