It was the stupidest idea in the world--there were surely more voting places than this, and they were surely not burning, but--this whole town had gone to rot, and as long as this was America's soil, then he'd hope that voting would kick that lardy idiot off his title, even if it meant giving it to another.
Which was why he was yanking off the back door gingerly, where the polling booths visibly stood through the path of flickering flames. And these booths in this house better not be the only ones, if his vote went up in flames.
One person that was undrone-like was trying to slip into his house. At least, that's what he spotted while peering around the corner. What if this was the culprit? The real terrorist mastermind. Sousuke decided to step around the side of the house and aim his shotgun at the perpetrator before he escaped inside. He cocked it, giving a clear warning sound.
Sophie followed after England, looking quite tired of this whole mess, and certainly did not appreciate having a gun pointed at her. She frowned at Sousuke as she stepped next to England.
"Sousuke it's me, Sophie and this is Arthur Kirkland, or England."
So his neighbor was a militaristic teenager who, for some reason, actually had possession of firearms. If he thought his day couldn't get any bloody better, well, then he was wrong. And not only that, another man who Sophie knew that he didn't! This was all going to rot.
"This isn't a party," he snapped. "Listen, put down that thing, and don't try to blow my bloody head off. We're your neighbors, and all we want to do here is get through your burning house and vote." Oh, yes, that was quite normal. He shoved away some remnants of the burning door and putting the handkerchief over his mouth, took a step inward.
Then he stepped back out. "I don't know who he is, though," he added as an afterthought, pointing vaguely at Lemony. "Someone identify him before he shoots his head off."
"America's house," he said impatiently. "At--what was it--1762 Beaver Street. Sophie and I will be headed there, and, Mr. Snicket, you'll join us. And you, boy with the... the gun." He peered uneasily through the wafting smoke again at him. "You can join us, and take your family with you. But keep the gun, I don't like how the drones look."
"But first, we vote, and I hope you all know who you're voting for." With that, he disappeared into the burning house.
Sophie didn't like England's rushing one bit, but chased after him into the house. "Arthur, please be careful. It wouldn't do anyone any good if you rush in and get hurt."
Sousuke motioned inside with his weapon and lowered it. After all, the first thing he did was make sure everything was clear inside before rushing outside.
"The inside is secure. I will remain here and make sure no one will enter from this direction."
Who would enter in this direction other than other voters? But he cast a dry look at the drones and decided to hold his tongue. Instead, he grabbed Sophie's wrist too tightly and pulled her with him through the burning house. Everything seemed to be on fire except for the polling booths.
"Sophie, vote here. Mr. Snicket, there. And yes, quickly, time is of the essence before this whole stupid place comes crumbling down."
For himself, he snatched his sleeve away from the fire and entered the polling booth roughly, handkerchief pressed over his nose again as he began to vote for the Mayor. He hesitated, halfway, and then gruffly scrawled America's name on the bottom. Hesitating again, he finished voting for the mayor and lightly crossed off America's name. Stuffing the paper in, he stepped back from the booth and waited for the rest of them to finish, as the fire ate away the rest of the house.
Never one to hesitate when fire was involved, Lemony quickly made his way to the both.
It was clear who to vote for at the moment. So with his shirt over his nose he quickly voted for the Mayor and put the ballot in the box. Stepping out he went to stand next to England. Hopefully they could leave this wretched place before they were consumed in the flames.
Sophie didn't protest to the tugging as she normally might have, but this was a bit of an emergency, and so quietly hurried to keep up with England. She hurried with her own vote, despite never voting for a leader before. She was quick on deciding anyone was better than their current leader and marked off America, remembering him saying he'd like to run things. She doubted her vote would mean anything in this place, but she ought to at least try to put the power in the hands of one of the citizens.
After finishing she stepped back and held her hand against the ballot box. "Please, I ask of you not to burn. These votes are quite important and should not be lost. You're a very important box, didn't you know. I'm sure you'll do your job just perfectly and protect these votes..."
Suddenly she fell into a coughing fit due to the gas. Still coughing, she held her sleeve against her face and hurried to England and Lemony. "Let's...go..."

Out of politeness and Sousuke's still brandished weapon, she introduced everyone to Lemony.

He looked into the building.
"Once we vote it seems that well shall need to find a new place to find shelter."
