Brothers
I just finished watching this really awesome show. I laughed, I cried, I ached, I fell in love with the characters and the world. And I'm very sad that there's no more for me to watch.
It's about these two brothers. Their mother is dead and their father is missing, and they're on a quest to set things right. There's the distinct possibility that they will fail, since everything seems to be against them. But they press on, following their own code of morality and sense of justice. They wander through all kinds of places, meeting all kinds of people. They see the horrors of racism and prejudice, and also the kindness of strangers.
The older brother is the shorter of the two, with the younger one towering over him. Yet the younger brother is the gentler, more sympathetic one, while the older brother is more passionate and excitable. They inherited their talent and skill for the path they follow from their father, who has left to continue his own journey. One brother misses their father and wants him back very badly--the other is angry at him for leaving and hostile to seeing him again.
Through the course of their journey, which continues through several years, they learn about the mystical forces that underpin their world. They gain teachers and allies, and lose them to death and dismemberment. They have friends who become enemies, and enemies who become friends. They uncover corruption, and eventually become fugitives from the law, fleeing from the very people who ought to be helping them.
They fight monsters. Not just regular people who do bad things--actual MONSTERS, that have strange powers and specific weaknesses. As they learn, the brothers become quite proficient at this. The action scenes are very dynamic and engrossing. And sometimes heart-wrenching. They face villains who want to end the world, kill and rend and destroy--sometimes they vanquish them, and sometimes the bad guys win.
Their only constant is each other--their affection and caring for each other is evident to those around them, and even changes the way some people see them. No matter how close they may become with certain allies, their brotherly bond will always be the strongest relationship they have. Though they fight and argue and disagree, this is never in doubt.
Through the course of the series, both brothers die, and are brought back to life by the sacrifice of the other. This is not a light undertaking--it's not like you can just go around raising any dead person you want in this world. In fact, resurrection of the dead has grave consequences. Yet when it comes to the other, the brothers don't hesitate. In the end, they're together, continuing their journey, saving people, learning things, the family business, and that's what matters.
By now you've probably guessed that I'm talking about Fullmetal Alchemist.
