Fic Recs

I have read some really awesome stuff lately. I seem to have a particular fondness for crossovers, in keeping with my omnivorous geekiness.

Dr. Who/Torchwood:

dw_cross is an awesome ficathon for Whoniverse crossovers. So far my favorite was Death and the Definitely-Not-A-Maiden, a story of the friendship between Captain Jack Harkness of Torchwood and Death of Discworld. Hilarious and occasionally touching, with many nods to the canon of both worlds. The characters' voices were perfect, too. It was the best you could hope for with such a crossover, the absolute BEST, and that's saying a lot. Also: Christmas cards! Absolutely fantastic.

There are other good ones in that community, too, including crosses with Stargate, Lost, Supernatural (a Dean/Martha Jones story set during The Year That Wasn't), and Harry Potter. The one with Blackadder is highly recommended, as well, with pitch-perfect characterization and hilarity all around. If you like Dr. Who or Torchwood at all, it's well worth checking out.

Supernatural:

To Cross the Universe by Insane Trolle Logic is an AU of What Is and What Should Never Be, but fits perfectly well within the canon. The author's summary is "The man Sam finds strung up in the djinn’s lair is not his brother." and I don't want to say more than that. Suffice to say that once I started reading this, I couldn't stop. It pulled me right in and drew me along from start to finish. A little angsty and uncomfortable in places, but completely satisfying.

There are some stories that, as I read the last word, instantly slip in my mind from fanfiction into canon. Ten Going on Thirteen by Dodger Winslow is one of them. John and his boys stop for breakfast, and Dean is a brat, and John is doing the best he can. And then things go wrong.... If you like it, be sure to check out the companion piece, Stay. It's much, much longer. This writer makes me like and understand John Winchester. Pretty impressive.

And humor! kroki_refur's Ten Expression picspams are absolutely hilarious! Yes. This. You should read all of them, but especially the one for 2.21, and the one where Dean salts and burns the internet, and the one where Sam claims to be evil, and the one where Dean is trying to pull practical jokes and is just weird instead, and um... Yes. All of them.

Supernatural Crossovers:

Take a Long Line by Derry has the Winchesters in trouble with the FBI yet again--this time with Don Eppes and his team. The characterization is fully fantastic, especially the interrogation with Don and Dean at the beginning. Despite their hostility toward each other, there's instinctive understanding, too, about the importance of family and the masks you have to wear to do the job. Sam and Charlie analyzing each other is also squeeful. The end drags a bit, but it's worth reading. I wish this was canon. In my head, it is.

And All the World Beneath by jenn is a loooooooong apocafic crossover with SGA. And it is so. Freakin. Good. I usually don't like apocafic, because there's always such a heavy sense of despair and it just rubs me wrong, but this was very well done. Basically, the demons won the war, and now Dean is wandering the Southwest, where he happens to run into this skinny guy with wild, dark hair.... Also, there's a thing that happens toward the end of the story that I usually don't care for, but here, I was actually rooting for it. And that's some fantastic writing, to make me actually WANT that certain thing to happen. It was perfect and amazing, and very satisfying. Excellent characterizations, compelling plot, and wonderful descriptions. You'll think you're right there.

Signs and Warnings by lembas7 is a cross with Stargate: SG-1. And it works perfectly well. Dean is SMART, like, really smart, which I appreciate. Everyone gets a chance to shine, and personalities also clash, as they certainly would in this situation. The first chapters kept me guessing about what was really going on. There's a whole timeline for the universe here.
