Once upon a time, there was a girl named Mo.
OK, so that wasn't really her name. And, at 40, she's not so much a girl any more. All woman, baby.
But, the point remains. A female human exists. She has adopted the moniker "MaybeOnce" for the sake of her nerdly fangirl pursuits.
Said nerdly fangirl has been making up fanfic in her head since the early days of too-early bedtimes and "What if the Bobbsey Twins had a long lost sister just like me?" (6 year olds are hereby given permanent Mary Sue amnesty) Mo got in to official fanfic by a late 1990's addiction to reading X-Files fic, and eventually ended up writing some groovy stuff in The Office (US) fandom,
She discovered Harry Potter fanfic shortly after the release of Deathly Hallows. Why so late, you ask? Well, Mo has been an unashamed lifelong consumer of YA lit...belonging to Olde SKool listservs devoted to Lucy Maud Montgomery and Madeleine L'Engle back in the 1990s....but didn't realize that ol' Harry had a big presence online. I know, I know, Mo lives under a very large rock. Don't judge. But, after getting over her shock that not everyone "got" the Ron/Hermione "dirt on your nose" as a classic RomCom meet-up and that some readers actually expected the Malfoys to turn good and the Weasley's to turn evil....well, there was some good reading to be found. And, interestingly enough, she also discovered the fascinating world of RPGs.
Now, I have learned that not all fanfic lovers are even aware of RPGs, so a quick intro: Role Playing Groups play out various scenarios as comment threads on various journaling sites (InsaneJournal, LiveJournal, etc) with different writers playing each character. In the immediate post-DH era, Mo wanted to read some "what comes next?" scenarios, and she found many in those early days. Sadly, with so many players, it was hard to find an RPG that stayed good for long...while they lasted, it was like getting to watch a soap opera unfold...but, then, invariably, , favorite writers would drop out due to personality clashes or Real Life pressures, and before you know it, your perfectly nice story has Hermione turning in to an emotionless shell with an inexplicable desire to make out with Harry. And, frankly....that's just GROSS.
Enter "Hallowed Ground." Started in late 2008 by some of the best players out there, this was going to be a re-imagining of Deathly Hallows, bound by canon and played out in real time. Unfortunately, RL demands caught up, and the story came to a halt before Ron even left Harry and Hermione in the forest, but, in the meantime, some really excellent short scenes emerged. I was lucky enough to play Harry and Vincent Crabbe in Hallowed Ground, along with some fabulous other players who are still good friends and outstanding writers. I'm going to be linking to some of my favorite scenes in the next few weeks, just to share a different kind of fanfic with the like minded.....
First off? My application for Harry.
