History teaches us many things. It gives us an idea of what went wrong, what should have been done, what should not have been done. But all this is done in hindsight. We see the event after it has been has happened and knowing the outcome of it, which certainly gives one a tremendous advantage.
What we don’t see the event as it is happening, as from the perspective of the people, with the current limited information as it is happening. Seeing the event from this perspective also robs us of the biggest advantage that is there when we see the it in hindsight. (which is the knowing the outcome of the situation).
This is the major reason as to why biographies fail to entice me. They certainly do give an idea of what happened, but they very rarely give the analysis in real time, as it happens.
This is where we need to change our perspective. We need to see the event as it happens, see the decision with the information available at that point of time and not in retrospective.
Secondly, even when we are in a situation, where we know that a particular decision made had been made turned out to be wrong. It can very well be argued that the same decision may turn out to be a correct one. Why? The main reason being that, though the situation seem similar in nature, it is not. The environment or context in which this needs to be seen has changed. By being aware of the pitfalls and the underlying reasons for the same, we can make the same situation towards the same result, merely by keeping the lookout on the environment and adapting according to the ever changing environment .
Lastly, as Individuals and more importantly as humans, very often we tend to remain stuck on our history. Questions like what would have happened if I had done that, How my life would have been different if I had not made that particular choice, are a few of the clear cut examples of of someone who remains stuck in the past.
Past is past. It is over & gone and your thinking about it will not make any difference it. Yes, given a choice, we all would like to live life a little differently, may just for curiosity sake to see it how we would have turned out differently. But my question to ask you is how will this worrying help your future?
You are certainly helping anyone, more so you, by worrying about this history. Agreed, there are lessons to be learned from history. Learn it and move on. Worry more about how your current decision will affect the future, as compared to doing a retrospection. Worry not about how your life could have been if you had made a different decision, rather about the how your future will be based on your current decision.
Don’t worry about the past. Learn from it to take care of your future...
