Greenland: Searching For Signs Of Life

Aug 08, 2008 00:44

I just amused myself for an hour by using Google Maps to look for signs of human habitation in Greenland. I figured that most of the population would live somewhere along the southwest coast since it was the area most free of ice. I also managed to narrow it down to about a dozen fjords which looked to be ice-free, but I still couldn't see any signs of habitation.

This view contains Nuuk, Greenland's capitol and its largest population center. Can you see it?

Eventually I gave in and went to Greenland's web-site and found a map of Nuuk. It didn't show me where on the island it was, but it gave me the shape of the peninsula it was on and a few minutes later I was able to locate it on Google Maps.

Of course I could have just entered 'Nuuk, Greenland' into the Google Maps search bar, but that would have spoiled the fun.
