Life Drawing

Feb 06, 2007 19:51

It's been way too long since I last posted so I've finally gotten around to photographing my life drawing efforts to date. I'm four weeks into the course at the Art Academy in Southwark and am enjoying it immensely.

What's nice is that instead of it being a "there's a nude, get drawing" type of class, the teacher - Chloe - is actually teaching us very helpful techniques and has a good structure to each session.

I don't have my drawings from week one, but collected here are links to my efforts from week 2 onward...

Week 2 - Structure

Here we worked on visualising shapes and structures of the body.

Week 3 - Line

This week we concentrated on different types of lines and how line can be used to convey emotion and mood. Notice the 4 line studies on the left, this was a pretty fun exercise in which we were supposed to draw the same pose but using Chinese calligraphic lines with exotic names like:
- Taut stretched steel wire
- Tumbling water and floating clouds
- Silken thread on the wind
- Gnarled tree

(see if I did a good enough job that you can match them to the drawings!)

Week 4 - Tone

Finally we got to do some shading. This time we were supposed to be less concerned about line and shape but getting the shaded tones right. The final image on the right there was one of those where I hated it to start with and got quite frustrated, but somehow I worked it around to being a piece I really liked in the end.

EDIT: Seems that I'm also learning more about HTML in the process of this post also. Quite chuffed that I sussed out how to hyperlink the thumbnails!
