self-interest is king?

A tennis player, playing in an important tournament, hurt her hamstring towards the end of a game.  She figured she could probably finish the game and win it, since she was ahead, thus eliminating her opponent from the tournament. She also knew that she wouldn't be able to continue in the tournament because of the injury. After consulting with her father in the coaches' box, she decided to forfeit the game so her opponent could continue in the tournament.
Good sportsmanship, right? How refreshing to hear of someone thinking of someone else for a change!
Wrong.
She's being investigated by the tennis association for cheating.
Her conversation with her father (which was in Polish) was picked up by microphones, and bettors used the information to change their bets.
Obviously, according to the officials, she did this to make money on the bets. Why would anyone be a good sport? The only reason for doing anything, their thinking goes, is self-interest. They can't even imagine altruism.
Once again, no good deed goes unpunished.
What a great lesson for kids. Don't do anything nice. You'll get into trouble.
And what a comment on our society that no one can imagine an attitude that's not "me first."
