LJ's seasonal layouts bother me. I decided to switch back to XColibur or whatever they call it. I was rather more fond of it than Horizon, anyway.
I think little more of Easter than I do of Christmas. The cheap chocolate on Monday/Tuesday afterwards is nice, though.
Oh yeah. Death Note ficlet! L + Light friendship. Spoilers up to episode 25. I should probably explain that up until *spoiler event!* I see Light and Kira as essentially fairly seperate personalities, if somewhat melded. Light-muse is no doubt influencing this.
Minutes and seconds are not real, true measurements of time. They are human inventions, human perceptions, struggles to make the world more personable to the average person.
So, too, is a careful facade. Of this Light was well-aware. Yet just as time seems so real to every person, so much like something of nature, it is not. He knows that how he acts is this way, too. There isn't really anyone who sees that what he is is a well-developed lie.
But is it?
Time is there, of that no one can argue. Though naturally it is not divided into neat little compartments, it still passes. Though the part of Light that is Kira was merely using the personality he had once had to trick others with, it could never be entirely a lie.
Something of Light remained through much of it, Kira's feigned lie that he was better than human. That instinct, that part of him, relied on the innocence to get closer to L, his enemy.
L and Kira were enemies. Light and Ryuuzaki were friends.
It was Ryuuzaki who Light, that tiny untainted part of him, relied on to stay in balance. The thought that there was someone out there who he could possibly consider a friend, someone on his own intellectual level.
Their conversation in the rain and following moments on the stairs weren't an act. Not to Light. Though he knew Kira had just been using him, manipulating 'himself' as well as any other person, he did truly possess genuine friendship for the other genius. Although he knew, almost right before it happened, what had been planned.
As L collapsed from the pain in his chest, it wasn't Kira who rushed to catch him. Not Kira, feigning friendship, but rather Light, desperate for a last stretch of hope. Even though he'd known it had to end this way, he was still in shock. Paralysed with abject, genuine terror.
He believed L had seen that, too, before he glimpsed Kira.
Kira's smirk was one of a malicious glee that could barely be bounded upon necessity. At that moment, he had defeated his worst enemies in one perfect plan.
It didn't really bother him, but it did occur to him, as he was leafing through Rem's Death Note later. He paused on the page where a name had last been written, fingers tracing the letters.
L Lawliet. Heart attack.
It made him wonder...upon that last fleeting glimpse of his friend's true nature, had L realized that 'Light' was now dead too?
I think that may very well have been one of the worst things I've ever written. Oh well, it's out of my head now.
