Tradewinds

  • I have left Dimagi, Inc. I've really enjoyed my time there. It was melancholy to give two weeks notice, but I feel good about the year I've been there. It seems nicely wrapped up and concluded, and now I can concentrate on my (awesome) UROP.* link: http://www.dimagi.com
  • This weekend (later today, actually), I'm heading to HOPE: "Hackers on Planet Earth" with some friends. It's a white-hat convention in NYC that I don't have terribly high expectations for. link: http://www.hopenumbersix.net/
  • The weekend after that I'm headed to Russia to visit family for the first two weeks of August.
  • By the time I get back, Rush and term will be upon us, and life will be all tenday, all Junior Lab, all the time.

It's funny how I think back on Roast as having been just a weekend or two ago. It's funny how time escapes you completely if you let it, gentle reader. I like the word "Tradewinds", because it conveys a positive change - something hopeful has picked up in the winds - an opportunity, an advantage, a curiousity, so you enter the boat, the fresh sea air around you, the seagulls in the distance - and cast off towards it.

My heavens low but the songs the same
Seems I'm always looking when I hear your name
You've been away but don't leave this side
Seen all of your faces you've tried to hide
So I'm sitting here in a train station
Traveling to an unknown destination
Oh I always seem to try
Still I'm one still I'm one to testify and I say

[chorus]
I'll find a way to let you know
Hold me close when tradewinds blow
Chances are you're over me, I'll catch that train eventually

To the questions that you're asking
I've only expected everything
These arms of mine are burning
As I see, as I see the pages turning

* There may or may not be a contribution from me to a major scientific Python package soon. We shall see. My greatest "wow, that's so cool" moment so far during my UROP was receiving personal mail from the MATLAB developers about some benchmarks that my advisor and I had posted to a dev list.
