equal rights for all californians

I don't usually talk much about politics in this journal (though in my daily life I can't shut up about them), but this is an issue that's very, very important to me.

From Equality California:

Every Californian should have the choice to marry the person they love. It’s a personal and fundamental freedom guaranteed by the California Constitution ( Read more... )

You know where I stand. But I have stepped it up a notch. I have decided that if this country is ever going to "allow" gays and lesbians equal rights, middle class heterosexuals need to get active with a grassroots movement.

I am openly discussing gay/lesbian equality whenever a political discussion pops up. (that means work, neighbors, etc...) In the past, I would generally keep quiet about most issues that I thought might put people "on edge," although if the subject of gay marriage was brought up by someone else, I would pipe up.

But after being in the Castro District this summer and then realizing that California might actually take away the right for gay/lesbians to marry....after allowing it....something in me snapped. I realized staying quiet yet supportive wasn't an option anymore.

It's time to make some noise and challenge all those friends of mine who share the same beliefs I do but are wary of "standing out" or offending their spouses, relatives, other friends.....to start discussing and supporting gay rights openly.

Small steps....but you have to start somewhere.

It bothers me so much, deep in my soul, that as a society, in our films and television, we still allow people to openly use the phrase "that is so gay."

AND I won't get on my soap box about the words..."retard or that's so retarded, you're so retarded," except to say that I lose pretty much all respect for people who just throw those phrases out as if they are simply slang and not horribly derogatory and hurtful words.
