D: [Regarding his wife Marie] I remember her brother Johnny used to give her beer and when she gave her heart to the Lord, she started studying the Bible and said she couldn’t do it anymore. She gave it up. She tried to walk in the way that her kids would see right and wrong. She went to Bible school at the church and got her degree for evangelism.
[A long silence]
E: [Regarding a song I wrote about he and my grandmother] I’m sorry if that song was painful.
D: Hm?
E: I’m sorry if that song was painful.
D: No that’s beautiful. Beautiful.
E: I really tried to capture your voice.
D: Yeah.
[Silence from our mouths. Nothing but the voices of birds all around us and the occasional sniffle from our noses]
E: What are you thinking right now?
D: Nottin [he's a Scotsman]. Just memories.
[Back to the silence, birds, and sniffles]
1:03 pm
D: Just goin’ over how good the Lord’s been to me. Wonderful family.
[My grandfather begins to sing] If the world from you withholds all its silver and its gold. And you’re heavily burdened with a load of care. Just remember in God’s word how He feeds the little birds. Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there. Leave it there. Leave it there. Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there. If you trust and never doubt, He will surely bring you out. Just take your burdens to the Lord and leave it there.
That’s what we have to do Elijah. Things we can’t handle and cant take care of, we have to leave it with Him there. Too often we try to do it on our own and it just doesn’t get done.
[He sings again] Sweep over our souls. Sweep over our souls. Sweet Spirit, sweep over our souls. Our joy is complete as we rest at Your feet. Sweet Spirit sweep over our souls. Peace, peace. God’s peace. Peace that will pardon and cleanse within. God’s grace, God’s grace, grace that is greater than all our sin.
E: I love you, grandpa.
D: I love you, son.
