The theme that struck me most about this move, believe it or not, is how easy it is for anyone to find a job. Fugui's wife sees that her family is shit out of luck and she gets a job serving water, and although her job looks very difficult and strenuous, it seemed like pecan pie for her to go out and find the actual job.
