Further to my previous blog entries
here and
here, the Academy now
has officially announced the list of 58 films submitted by various countries for consideration in the Foreign Language Film Award category. According to the
official rules:“All submissions sent to the Academy will be screened by the Academy’s Foreign Language Film Award Committee(s). After the screenings, the committee(s) will vote by secret ballot to nominate five foreign language pictures for this award.”
The five nominees are to be announced (with the other Oscar nominees) on
January 31, 2006.
Austria does not appear on the list, as the Academy silently disqualified Caché because its dialogue was in French (not an official language of Austria). Greece is also absent; its submission
Brides must also have been disqualified as its dialogue is mostly in English. It was earlier reported that Italy’s submission Private was disqualified for being not in Italian, but Italy was given the opportunity to submit a different film, which it did. Weren’t Austria and Greece given the same opportunity?
From the list of 58 submissions, I have seen eight:
Chile, "Play," Alicia Scherson
Denmark, "Adam's Apples," Anders Thomas Jensen
Finland, "Mother of Mine," Klaus Härö
Hungary, "Fateless," Lajos Koltai
Norway, "Kissed by Winter," Sara Johnsen
Palestine, "Paradise Now," Hany Abu-Assad
Romania, "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu," Cristi Puiu
Switzerland, "Tout un Hiver sans Feu," Greg Zglinski
