I wish this wasn't what I was posting about.

I wish more people were like the new gardener our building has hired to take care of the garden ( Read more... )

Unfortunately I think in 'PR' terms it does look very bad - for example, there was a girl from Huddersfield and a lad from Bradford on board and their families were all over the local news here last night.

I had no doubt about it. :( I think if it were deserved, I'd feel differently than I do, but I'm honestly sure that if the soldiers would have been violent "just because", than we would have seen far more than 9 dead at the end of this.

I didn't know about this. What are they saying?

And regardless... *hugs* It's good to be able to at least get it all out.

I assume they were in with this lot - to be honest I wasn't paying it great attention because I was making dinner the first time it was on and after the first few repeat showings you tune it out (the joys of 24-hour news!).

I did some digging around: this is the Huddersfield girl. The article references Stop the War. I can't find the BBC one (the shootings today have taken over the news) but the Have Your Say is here

Thank you for the links, hon. And I heard about the shootings, I'm so sorry. :( I wish we lived in a better world. *sigh*

I'll have a look at all the links you've given me, but in the meanwhile, what I'm hearing? Doesn't make me happy. Apparently, the "activists" who required medical help were taken to Israeli hospitals and when the staff tried to help them, they shouted at them, cursed and refused to be examined by anyone who isn't a Palestinian doctor. Like that behavior isn't bad enough, when a Palestinian doctor was brought for them, they shouted and cursed at him too for being a traitor.

I don't get these people at all.

I just wanted to thank you for making this post.

I'm hardly well informed about the situation in Israel or even this specific incident, but I do care and I'm glad you've given me a bit of perspective into what's going on.

*hugs*

Thank you, bb. You just made me feel a million times better, if that makes sense at all given the circumstances, because one of the things that trouble me too often when it comes to the Middle East conflict is the feeling that people just don't care enough to pay it any attention and that a post like this one would simply be skipped by everyone.

*hugs you to bits* <3

I'm glad I could do something of use :)

In general I try to stay informed on what's going on in the world, but unfortunately we live in fairly fucked up world so my attention is so divided that rarely do I have a change to really get into the details of any single event or situation.

But this is important and I'm glad you've given me deeper insight than what I've been getting from the media coverage in Finland :)

*huge hugs*

I definitely think that a big part of the problem is the way that the news are covered, like everyone is assumed beforehand to have ADD, so for the most part, the media covers things in a very superficial way. And if the media does it, no wonder people for the most part don't even realize there's more to a story than what they're shown in a 5-10 minute segment. So the very fact that you're aware is already better than the case is with a lot of people. Because there's nothing worse than people who sincerely think they know a subject when they don't. It means they're not even open to hearing more about it when they get the chance.

See why I kinda think you're great for simply reading all of this? :) And I'm glad if I could do even something small to help you understand this whole mess a bit better.

*loves on you LOADS* <3

I love it when "innocent weaponless people" attack/hold back armed forces for hours... Too bad no one in Israel realized how much of a PR stunt this was before it was too late.

I'm so sorry, dear. *hugs*

I know, right? *headdesk again and again* I can't understand how anyone's buying that one. You know how someone tried justifying that to me? By saying those were just work tools that "happened" to be part of the aid they were taking to Gaza. Yeah, I know I always work my garden using stun grenades. Not to mention, you know, nobody forced them to use the "work tools". Oh, and I'm hearing now they were really well organized - they were assigned groups with every group assigned a group leader, they had tons of money on them, communication devices, night vision goggles... They certainly came prepared to fight ( ... )

This post made me very sad. I know that among the people I speak to, Israelis are not considered barbaric or sadistic because of what has happened; and although I admittedly speak mostly to liberalists, pacifist intellectuals who always try to see both sides (sometimes frustratingly so!) I hope this might be of some comfort to you, darling ( ... )

Oh, hon, that is a huge comfort. Just because someone is a liberalist, pacifist intellectual doesn't automatically mean that they are willing to look at both sides of every conflict, so to know that there are still people who actually do see the complexity of things and that we're not perceived as nothing but violent beasts is very important to me and I don't take it lightly at all. *hugs*

But more importantly, being reminded of friends like you is incredible. I think I'd be completely lost without you. Just knowing you're there, thinking of me like I am of you is heart-warming and it is part of what makes it all better, despite the unnecessary ugliness that life takes on sometimes.

One day things will be better, I hope, and when people will say "peace", everyone will understand it, mean it, cherish it. Until then, it's good that there are people like that exactly in the face of people who don't believe in peace or worse, are willing to abuse the word and the concept.

I love you so very much, hon. Thank you for being you. ♥
