Adventures in Home Owning

As if hail stones of death weren't enough.

LIPA seems to be in chaos with the electricity this past week. After two power outages (one following the 2011 Rain/Hail Storm of Doom), today was apparently their big day to screw up - with two in one day.

The first was a minor issue, just meant we had no lighting. But, they had to of course strike on a day when I was attempting to rectify a long standing problem I had with power outages. My garage door opens electronically. Nobody knows what happened to the keys, so my dad and I removed the locks to get new ones. Of course once the electronic lock was wired, we shut the door, testing the key that would work electronically and decided to take lunch.

Then the power went out, leaving us unable to open it manually, and finish the job. Making a job that should have been a couple hours a two day affair.

During this, I had this morning noted my kitchen sink was draining rather slowly. So, I figured I'd break out the Draino and hit it later in the day. I did some dishes and suddenly the thing wasn't draining at all. During the power outage I got the water out of the stink and hit the drain with lovely chemicals. The first bottle failed to clear it.  Then the second did. Then I was working a plunger like mad, getting all kinds of lovely crap out.

I put half another bottle in and plunged mightily...so much so, it backwashed into my dishwasher, flooding it with water and draino to the point that it leaked out onto the kitchen floor.

Obviously fixing the later has taken precedent over the former.

At least the power is back on.
