well it's time for another one of my rants
this little question is been in my head for a few yrs now i dont speak of traditional art vs digital art but rather what is considered professional?
is a sign done on a computer professional? what if the sign is a porly done sign?how bout if the sign is done by hand? ive taken graphic design in college an my professor said that my work must be digital even though i can produce a high quality graphic sign or logo on paper 10 times faster than it takes to produce it in a program then just upload it into a vector program commonly illustrator. though my digital programs at home are still faster than adobe and older. yes i use more programs but it runs my processor less than adobe software of any kind does. adobe software is good but on most systems it overwhelms the processor and takes to long to finally open. yes some of the graphic software i have is obsolete and the company no longer exists but the stuff they made was ahead of its time. but enough about software some people like the software i don't thats just preference. its the creator behind the work that makes it good.
now to my point of why i am typing this rant. recently at my work my bosses boss said no more hand made signs they dont look professional. he said that because hes talking to all stores not just the one i work at. but when a digitally made sign is just box text with a grey background it is a poor quality sign. now the signs ive done use the same textile as the product the sign is advertising and the companies colors. now isnt that better than traditional box text and grey backgrounds. now if the company gave color printers to is corporate businesses then it would give the sign a little more credibility but still look a little low quality. i probably spent the same tiem making my sign compared to who ever the company hired or has making there sins that they send via email to be printed tarpapered to sent to us via the traditional mail for everything else we receive. heck if i took the 5 minutes in fireworks to make the sign more fancy then i would but i wouldn't get extra pay for it and that sign would probably be used at various different stores not just the one i work at. there is still a lot of signs at the store i work at that are still up because they look better than the ones they want us to use and were made at least a week earlier on my spare time on one day when i was caught up with our daily tasks.
now as i know it a lot recently more than ever signs have been trying to look more traditional and use traditional similarities than look digital signs today don't want to look like signs of the 80's were graphic design was the fancy of Tron. this age is more realistic and classical style than the look of what can i SLAP out with large text. i dont think the company realizes that the signs thy want printed need to be greyscale friendly and look good at that. now everything is grey scale friendly but not everything looks catchy to the eye to have the person want to look at that sign. if you want the data to out there but just ignored these signs are perfect but if you want them to be seen u need more than box text. now I'm not saying make the sign fancy just make it a lil more catchy.
I've always been able to ell quality signs over low quality signs and much more being that my visual problem causes me to see textiles and more as imagery and for some reason a slightly 3D image. yes i know it sounds weird but has made it easier for me to know what is graphically sound. when you see a sign do you look at it and just pass by or do you really read it. most people look and pass by. if the sign is good someone will look at it and go hey look at that or something of that nature. that is what i am trying to point out with all of this. i want someone to do a second take at that sign or to actually look at it.
im not telling digitla artists to stop o traditional artists to give up and go digital im jsut saying if your going to make something just for the heck of it at least make it good enough that people want to see the sign instead of it just being there. yes i have not finished college but i have made fryers for a few companies and peoples parties. they are just local jobs bu8t thats because I'm still not sure on how to set up a website and take online buyers. i may still finish my education in art in college but i know that not everything needs to be digitally done if it is easier to do it traditionally and impose it digitally to something. yes i can take the time to do something digitally it just takes a very short time longer to make than i can drawing it up scanning it adding its color and arranging it to what it should be. heck a simple sign is easy to make digitally i just think they need to be a lil more cathy than plane box text or bold text.
for all you digital artists you are great at what you do and keep it up. i just don't have the visual patience to sit at a screen for so long. heck i cant even stare at a television for a wile without taking time to look at something else.
i guess my true question is what is considered professional?
well thats all for now. i just needed to vent a little.
