“So, Shepard,” the krogan began, gaining the attention of the two women before him, “I take it that you know this asari?” He motioned his head towards the blue alien before him.
“Yeah,” Shepard nodded, “Liara and I fought Saren and the geth two-years ago before the Collectors came and killed me.” Grunt couldn’t help but crack a small smile.
“I somehow knew no force in the galaxy could keep you down for long, battlemaster.” The smile on his face faded, “Still, I don’t see how anyone would have an asari fight alongside them… they’re soft.” This earned a stern look from both Liara and Shepard. Grunt noticed the unwanted attention, “But if she fights alongside battlemaster, then she must be good for something.” That didn’t help his situation.
“We’ll be off to the Shadow Broker’s home base soon, Shepard.” Liara spoke finally. This diverted Shepard’s glare from the krogan to the asari. It seemed this asari was also useful for diverting scrutiny. “Yeah,” Shepard shot back, venom dripping from her words, “so you can go off and play revenge while I play hired goon and hack terminals.”
“That’s not fair! He tried to sell your body to the Collectors! I didn’t have a choice.”
“Yeah…” Shepard didn’t seem convincing, slumping back into her seat, arms firmly crossed, closing herself from her asari friend. Liara saw this and slumped back into her seat too, defeat written on her face. It almost seemed like an elderly krogan passed his prime being reprimanded by his nagging mate. Were the two joined?
Damnit! Grunted thought in frustration. This isn’t good at all! New topic! New topic!
“So, Liara,” Grunt began awkwardly, “Who or what is this Shadow Broker?”
“The Shadow Broker is the head of an extensive empire,” Liara replied, “built on trading and acquiring information from major political parties, groups and other organizations. He made the mistake of crossing me by trying to sell Shepard’s body to the Collectors and for imprisoning my friend: a mistake that will cost his dearly.”
“I didn’t ask for his damn life-story! I just wanted to know if we can kill him or not.”
“We can and I will.” The asari held her hands together to her face in evil contemplation, “I’m counting on it.”
“Well,” Grunt continued, “go ahead with your revenge thing. I’m just going to kick the Shadow Broker’s ass and get it over with.”
“Then you’ll probably have to get in line, Grunt.” Shepard sniped, her piercing bluish-green eyes eyeing Liara. This earned an equally stern look from the asari.
This fight with the Shadow Broker better be worth this pointless tension. Grunt thought bitterly, just as the shuttlecraft took off for the Shadow Broker’s home base.
