So Dec. 13th was my little brother's birthday. Matthew turned 15, time for his driver's permit. I'm giving him our old car (1987 olds delt 88 royale brougham), leaks oil and transmission but runs(as long as you keep fluids in it). So I spent the 13th running around trying to get it all legal. It has been just sitting in my drive-way for the past year and half except the few times this past summer when I took him out practicing. I already have insurance on it but the tags were expired since August 2005. I knew it needed a few things to pass inspection but wasn't sure. I called the mechanic's and asked about the windshield wiper arm, of course it needs that but he couldn't tell me how much it would cost to fix without seeing it. He said to bring it up for the inspection. He'd look at it and let me know.
Now I'd been up to this mechanic before for an oil change and he was very friendly, very. So I had a sneaky suspicion he'd pass it even with a few quirks. Sure enough, it had to have the wiper arm, brake light, and a gas cap. He said the brakes and couple other things passed, but gave me a look that said they probably shouldn't have( but because he liked me, they did). *insert creepy chills here* He gave me an estimate on what they'd charge to fix the arm etc. I said I didn't have that much and I'd just try to fix it myself. I got it fixed with a little help from some guy and my brother-in-law at the parts store.
Later that night when Shane got home, he asked why I was all prettied-up, "trying to look good for the mechanics?" I said "yep, and it worked." We laughed as I stated "just using my feminine wiles." (I don't get to use them too often).
I took the car back up the next day and it passed, but I had to chit-chat all cute like as he told me I had a nice smile and what a good sister I am. Blah-blah-blah.
I hope my brother appreciates this. I still need to get the car an oil change, new battery, new alternator, and new brake pads but that will have to wait a bit. The important things is that it's running, it's legal, it's insured, it's his, and it's free.
My mom is on disability and has always been poor, his dad is nice but completely irresponsible. I've taken care of him quite a bit and it kind of feels like he's my kid too. I hope he is responsible with the car...but have informed him not to wreck it on purpose as it is maybe worth a whopping 200 bucks and insurance will not give him enough to replace it, HA!
My birthday is Dec. 22nd and I wonder what I'm getting, hopefully not a P.O.S. *giggles*... but a free P.O.S. is better than no P.O.S.
