Tm prompt 258: What words would you like to see added to/removed from common use?

Dec 21, 2008 19:53

Kid, Logan, Son, you all might want to skip this one. I'm not feeling particularly charitable at the moment.

Bluntly? Superhero would be about at the top of my list, most days. Hero, after all, is defined as "one admired for achievements and noble qualities", therefore a super-hero should be even more than that, shouldn't they? Someone like I once believed the JSA and the All-Star Squadron were: larger than life, noble, brave, people you could count on to be there when things turned truly bad...

How easily you learn that even the heroes have feet of clay -- I learned that one in Korea, when none of the "superheroes" I had grown up on the stories of were there. When they all decided that their secrecy was more important than their own peoples' lives. Oh, yes, I know all the arguments, and given how many of them had families, I can even understand (a little) the reasons for their choice to abandon the field.

But in their wake, rather a new breed sprang up, wouldn't you say?

People that choose to rape a man's mind and leave him living as a twisted mockery of himself with only a spell to stop him from preying on their own children with all of that old evil.... People who decry the use of necessary measures with one side of their mouth, claiming to be oh-so-clean, and yet know they are entirely tangled in blood-stained history. People who claim to uphold the law, and yet break it with every evening they hide behind their masks and commit assault after assault in the name of "stopping crime" with their fists and feet.

Really. "Superhero"? Please.

At least I'm honest about what I do.
