Daaé Defends Ghost's Good Name
21/12/2006 10h02

PARIS, France (AFP) - After a week of refusing to comment on the validity of statements she allegedly made to a confidante regarding her relationship with The Phantom of the Opera, Christine Daaé, current darling of the opera scene, spoke briefly to reporters upon leaving rehearsals at the Opera last night.

"Erik is a kind soul being persecuted by society because of his appearance. He has been driven to do things because of the behavior of others towards him. He deserves our sympathy and compassion, not more hatred," Miss Daaé said.

Early this morning, M. Cartier, attorney for the Chagny family and representing Miss Daaé, held a press conference on the grounds of the Chagny estate, dismissing any presumptions of guilt in Miss Daaé’s statement the previous night.

"My client's statement was not meant to infer or deny guilt on the part of the Opera Ghost for any misdeeds he may or may not have performed," Cartier said. "Miss Daaé's sensitivity towards others is well-known but she is well aware that the law must be upheld." Mr. Cartier did not specify if Miss Daaé's remarks were in regards to the anonymous letter sent to the press or the recent lawsuits filed by the Opera management.
