Pick any passage of 500 words (or around that- or a drabble) from
any story I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words,

"Yea. Earlier.. I.."
"You've always had a way with words," Saul quipped, not wanting to go back over the specifics of that discussion.
He huffed a laugh, taking some of the tension from the room. "Yea, I guess I do."
Saul smiled, but it quickly faltered. It didn't matter if that misunderstanding was easily enough put to bed, they had a greater issue which would only continue to, quite literally, grow. "Frak Bill.. what are we going to do about this?"
"That's what I thought we could talk about."
"And?"
"I don't know." He laced his fingers together, frowning down at them. "What is it, you were thinking?"
"Never mind that you didn't want it, I probably just ruined your retirement."
His eyes crinkled with amusement, pleased that they were back on the same wave length. "I was thinking you might have thought I ruined your life."
"You? When Cottle gets more tests done we're probably going to discover I'm a self-inseminating freak of nature."
Bill reached forward, placing a hand on his knee. "You aren't a freak of anything." He paused before carefully adding, "except maybe the rack."
Saul didn't have it in him to laugh at the attempted joke. "This kid. Gods, this kid is gunna..."
"This kid is going to do fine."
Saul barely managed a nod.
"We'll get through this."
"We survived a war," he tried to crack a smile. "I suppose a kid can't be much different."
Bill smiled sadly. "No, they find different ways to turn your world upside down and break your heart."

I wanted to acknowledge Bill's kids, and Zak's death. Not dwell a lot of time on it because this is such a short piece, but putting that out there was important.
There also needed to be a moment where the two of them talked about their situation- which was totally absent from my initial story idea- which was just the Cottle POV in sickbay where they find out.
It was a lot of fun writing them, first time I've ever tried it. They've known each other so long that it worked for me that they'd be able to pull through. Of course, it couldn't be perfect, but at this point I felt like the boat had settled enough so that they no longer felt like they were getting tossed around and could actually help each other out.
Hm.. S'bout it. -laugh-
