Story Or Series Title:
KatieFandom: Bartimaeus Trilogy
Culprit Author's Name: butterflywing
Full Name (plus titles if any): "Official" Name: Lara Joanston, Birth Name: Katie/Kaitlin
Full Species(es): Human/Magician (Apprentice)
Hair Color (include adjectives): "Light, almost white, blonde hair"
Eye Color (include adjectives): Unmentioned
Unusual Markings/Colorations: None
Special Possessions (if any): None
Annoying Origin: From a corpse (Really!) London
Annoying Connections To Canon Characters: From the really obvious hints, she's the daughter of Kitty and probably Nathaniel, even though he's dead. She's also the apprentice of Nathaniel, which is odd because, well (1) He's dead and (2) I didn't think magicians could have children, or apprentice them. Correct me if I'm wrong. Nathaniel is also well connected to the Prime Minister, who is Jane Farrar
Annoying Special Abilities: Summoned djinn before she turned 12.
Other Annoying Traits: She's too stupid to make up a name when (What I'm calling it. It doesn't have a name in the story, and it's not the one from the books) the Resistance asks her for her name.
Please include a small sample of the worst of this story:
When Lara woke, it was to find that she was on her back, staring straight up into the face of a boy. He was wearing a mask, black, with only the tiniest slits for eyes, so she couldn’t tell how old he was. He was leaning over her, so she couldn’t see how tall he was either. The only reason she could even tell he was male, was because he spoke.
“Hello?”
“Who are you, and what are you doing here! Let go of me!”
The boy turned his head and spoke to someone behind him. “Magician’s apprentice, the usual sort,” he said, “Bossy. What do you want me to do with her?”
Another voice, softer, but clearly exited, “How old is she? Can you tell? This could be just the sort of thing we’ve been waiting for!”
“About 11 or 12, but do we really want her with us? She’s so-“
“She’s young. She can be trained, given time.” A third voice, male again, deeper than the voice of the one standing over Lara.
“What’s your name?”
“Why should I tell you? And stop talking to me like I’m not even here! I’ll have you know I’m a magician’s apprentice and you’re just a load of-“
“Just say your name, or I might have to go to your grave and find out what it is that way!”
“But I’m not- Oh!” Lara’s eyes widened in surprise and shock. She’d have to say something, this was obvious. On the other hand, it was equally obvious she couldn’t give then her official name- if she managed to escape from them, they’d be able to find her, and-
“Katie,” she said.
Above her, she felt the boy stiffen, and, surprisingly, get off her. She clambered to her feet and surveyed the three youths standing in front of her, the shortest one, who had been holding her down, was a few inches shorter than she was, and the tallest, the one with the girl’s voice, was around the same height. This girl spoke now.
“Katie. What’s that short for? Kaitlin?”
“Well, I guess…”
“Oh, it’s your birth name and can’t remember!”
“No, it’s not!” but she’d spoken too fast, and she knew they knew it too. Why had she told them her birth name!” See? Too stupid to make up a name. She has to say her birth name.
“Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone,” said the girl, and Katie sighed in relief.
Yep. A magical prodigy (In secret, of course), the daughter of Kitty, apprentice to Nathaniel, and soon-to-be revolutionary.
