Fun with hex ... as in hexadecimal!
I am a true geek, I can read hex easier than binary and octal, which of course I can read as well as decimal - and I am not kidding.
So it always cracks me up when someone questions my geekiness. Of course there are all types of geeks. Not all geeks are techies, although a lot of folks *pretend* to be techie to up their geek quotient.
According to Wikipedia (So you know it is true -- gotta love that consensual reality!) : A geek is an individual who is fascinated by knowledge and imagination, usually electronic or virtual in nature. Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word geek as "1: a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake 2: a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked 3: an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity," though these are only three of many definitions.
So my definition of geek is most aligned with definition #3, obviously. But I bet others are using the more generalized version which is underlined. So okay, so everyone wants to be a geek. Fine. Define your terms people!
So anyway,
yezida questioned my geek status cuz I like Harry Potter more than the Dark Materials series. Even the sweet natured
quedishtu was somewhat surprised.
Let's clear this up, okay. Both are delightful series, both have really cool elements and both are really fun to read. And yeah, I wish I could play with the alethiometer.
But lets be clear, only one has street cred amongst the hermetic qabalists -- Harry Potter. C'mon! Four houses aligned with the four elements, seven volumes based on the alchemical sequence. And all the allusions to myth and archetypes. I am not just a geek people. I am a magickal, spiritual, mythological, psychological and technical geek! So yeah, the golden compass is magical, dark and fun, but Harry Potter is magickal, dark and fun-- there is a difference.
Besides, Hermione reminds me of myself as a child ...
