Wolfstar de-mystified

Nov 28, 2010 19:25

Little known fact: when I'm not in cosplay, I wear a pendant (it's actually a tag I got out of the machine at Petco)- a red heart with the words "Wolfstar 4ever". When asked what that meant, I did tell the truth sometimes, but most often I dodged the question. Meanwhile, I have uploaded several photos to Cosplay.com under the title "Wolfstar".  Here are the pics in question:

Figure out the meaning of "Wolfstar" from looking at those? If not, here's a further explanation:

FictionAlley, a once-popular "Harry Potter" fanfiction archive and forum, came up with names for the various pairings (canon or otherwise) between HP characters- sort of like how all the different pairings in the Pokemon fandom have names ("Rocketshipping", "Pokeshipping", "Advanceshipping", "Gymshipping", and "Palletshipping" to name a few examples). FictionAlley did it a little differently, though- they named the pairings as if they were actual seafaring vessels, thus names like "HMS Orange Crush", "HMS Wolfstar", "SS Guns n' Handcuffs", "HMS Pumpkin Pie", "HMS Honks", "HMS Red Moon", "SS Leather and Libraries", "SS Flaming Toad", "HMS Viktory", "SS MetaDragon", "HMS Loonies and Lions", "SS Thorn and Buck" (no apparent rhyme or reason why some are "SS" and some are "HMS" since they're not ships in the literal sense), or even one simply called "the Good Ship" (yes, a lot of those names are lame and/or make no sense). Some of these ship names (minus the "SS"/"HMS" parts) spread beyond FictionAlley, most notably Wolfstar (even before I started wearing it around my neck and using it as a file name).

All that said, "Wolfstar" is the name for... Remus/Sirius. You know, the werewolf and the guy named after a star? Yes, I am aware they're both male. Yes, I choose not to acknowledge certain "developments" in books 6 ("Half-A$$ed Plot Half-Blood Prince")  and 7 ("Deathly Hollow Hallows") as well as movies 6, 7 ,and 8 (unfortunately, the movie people made "Deathly Hollow Hallows" a two-parter, something they should have done with movie 4 ("Goblet of Fire") and movie 5 ("Order of the Phoenix")) and it bothers me that even fellow Wolfstar shippers are so keen on at least one of those "developments". I'm hardly a "slasher"/"yaoi fangirl"/whatever else they're called, though- there is exactly one other slash pairing I'm anywhere near as passionate about as Wolfstar, and even it's a fairly distant second (it's also in a different fandom entirely). And I don't hate Tonks. I just hate that she was reduced to an oven for a bun that did not need to be baked, and Remus was dragged down right along with her for the same reason.

Now that that's cleared up, here's a bonus challenge: without going to Google or FictionAlley and assuming I never told you (pretending I never told you if I did), can you figure out what those other HP ships I mentioned are?
