so from what i hear, everyone is doing ok. i know a few people who have lost their homes but they seem ok too. the neighborhood is in a very friendly mood. sadie and i have been going on walks in the morning (we discovered a park within 2 blocks of the house!) and talking to people. i had a conversation with one of the guys fixing the power lines and he said he's from north carolina and he hasnt been home since hurricane charley, just working trying to make sure everyone has electricity.
the national guard is still here, though. they are somehow less comforting... i think its the AK-47s strapped to their backs. its like, hey kids! need ice, water, food, or emotional support? run to those guys with the big scary guns! theyre out here checking island passes, to make sure only residents get in and to keep peace when we run low on MREs.
speaking of, has anyone gotten any of these MREs? those crazy, sci-fi, self-heating, freezedried, government-issued "meals, ready-to-eat" (MRE). this is what the soldiers live on. some bags have candy in them. they were all colorful and were similar to jolly-ranchers. ben and i think the candy is laced with something extra... we felt suspiciously upbeat after eating them. in WWII the govt gave soldiers methamphetamine to keep them alert and detached. and when else does one have to live on military rations than when there is some sort of war or other catastrophe? anyway, the meals are strange but worth experimenting with. dont burn yourself with the self-heating packet.
i must be going. HAPPY (LATE) BIRTHDAY, KENDRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry i didnt come by last night, but i will definitely be seeing you this after noon.
loooooooove, joooooooooooni
