As Miri went through the day Monday, what Brayan had said kept running through her head. Did he mean it, or was he just delusional? Had he even said that at all? Miri hadn't told Lori what Brayan had said. She hadn't told anyone.
Since he wasn't at school, it made it easier to try to ignore what had happened. She could forget about it for half an hour or so, but then it came back.
"I love you"
Did she even feel the same way?
When Miri got home from school, she started to get ready for After Dark. She put curles in her hair after she hairsprayed and gelled it. She let them sit there as she carefully lined her eyes, put on a pound of mascara and foundation, and started to pick out her clothes. All Of the sudden, Miri stopped. Where was her ring? Where was her lucky heart ring?
She dug through all her bags. She knew she had it on Friday. Maybe she left it at Lori's?
RINGRINGRING..."Hello?"
"Hey Lor, I was wondering if you'd seen my heart ring?"
"No I haven't. Why do you need it?"
"For tonight."
"But no one will be able to see it, unless they're in the front row."
"I know. But it's my good-luck charm."
"I'll let you know if I find it."
"Thanks."
"Hey Mir-"
But it was too late. Miri had already hung up her phone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Josh looked down at the hearts on the ring in his hand. His excuse to talk to Miri. He knew that she would forgive him. Maybe she would even give him a second chance.
--------------------------------
Miri was rushing around, quadruple-checking that her ring wasn't somewhere in her house.
"Miri! If we don't leave right this instant you're going to be late!" her mother yelled up the stairs.
"Coming!"
She gave one last desperate look around her room. Maybe she'd find it later.
When she finally got to the school, she ran into the dressing rooms behind the stage. She got some of the cheerleaders, who were doing some cheer or something, to do her make-up and hair. They gossiped and giggled as they did it, engaging her in meaningless small talk. Miri wasn't really paying attention. Her mind was off at Lori's where Brayan surely was. What was he doing right now? Would he be well enough to come to the show?
"Hey... Miri? You're up next" said a techie said.
"Oh. Okay." He walked off. "Thanks girls, but I've got to skeedattle."
"No prob!" They chorused.
Miri rolled her eyes as she turned around. She didn't really like them, but she tolerated them because they could be decent. Miri peeked out of the side of the curtains. She saw her parents, and there was Lori, Jane, and Jimmy, and was that- Brayan?? Miri sharply inhaled.
"She may know a few things about Pretty Girls, being one herself, but here's Miri Redwell singing Pretty Girl by Sugarcult!" the host said into his microphone.
Time to go on. Miri closed her eyes and whispered a quick prayer that she wouldn't screw up entirely, then strutted out onto the middle of the stage. She grabbed the mircophone as the music started.
Pretty girl is suffering, while he confesses everything
Pretty soon she'll figure out what his intentions were about
Speaking of wondering what intentions, what was Josh doing standing right where she has been? He wasn't in the show!
That's what you get for falling again
You can never get 'em out of your head
Miri laughed in her head. That was certainly true. Brayan...
It's the way
That he makes you feel
It's the way
That he kisses you
It's the way
That he makes you fall in love
Was this love?
She's beautiful as usual with bruises on her ego and
Her killer instinct tells her to beware of evil men
HA! Whatever. She didn't fit any of those. If she had, she would have never said yes to Josh.
And that's what you get for falling again
You can never get 'em out of your head
And that's what you get for falling again
You can never get 'em out of your head
It's the way
That he makes you feel
It's the way
That he kisses you
It's the way
That he makes you fall in love
It's the way
That he makes you feel
It's the way
That he kisses you
It's the way
That he makes you fall in love
Love
Pretty girl, pretty girl
After Miri was done onstage, Josh pulled her into a corner. He hung his head and held out his hand. There was Miri's ring!
"Where did you get that?" she asked.
"Well, umm... I-I took it out of your car." Josh said meekly. "I needed to talk to you again. You won't look at me, or talk to me. I can't eat. I can't sleep. You complete me."
Miri just looked blankly at him. Suddenly, she smiled slightly and leaned forward as though she was going to give him a hug. She took her ring out of his hand, and whispered in his ear.
"I feel sorry for any girl that falls for your crap."
She then walked around him, leaving Josh standing looking stunned at her as she walked into the dressing room. The cheer girls immediatly surrounded her.
"Did you just turn down THE Josh Blayton? He's like the hottest guy in school!" Courtney, the head cheerleader said.
"Yeah, I did." Miri smiled. "Hey, I bet if you went out there to comfort him, he might ask you out. He really admires how strong you are."
"Really?" Courtney giggled, then slid out the door.
Miri still felt the adrinaline rushing through her. Feeling enboldened, she went out the door into the auditorium. She sat down in the empty seat between Lori and Brayan. Lori whispered a quick "Good Job," to her then turned back to her conversation with the guy in her other side.
----------------------------------------------------
After all the preformences were done, Lori turned to Miri.
"Hey, can you take Brayan home for me? Benjamin and I are going to go see a movie or something."
"Yeah, no problem." Miri said excitedly. This could be her chance.
Miri pulled her car keys out of her purse. She silently led the way to her car, occasionally glancing at Brayan out of the corner of her eye. Why in the bloody hell did he have to be so cute?
"You want to go get a snack or something?" he blurted out.
"Sure" Miri was suprised, but quickly recovered.
"How about we go to The Big Puddle?"
The Big Puddle was a smallish pizza place that was in the middle of downtown. It had the best pepperoni pizza and cheese sticks. They were to die for. Yummy cheesey goodness with a yummy hunk of man candy? Like Miri was going to say no to that!
"Let's go."
As she drove the couple of streets over, she felt that Brayan was tense. He seemed to shut down and was quieter then usual. When they got there, Miri's seat belt was stuck. She tried and tried, but she couldn't get it undone. Finally, Brayan leaned over.
"Do you need help getting that off?"
"What?!?"
Brayan blushed. Oops. Miri realized she had taken that the wrong way.
"Uh, Sure" Miri said.
After they had spent a half fun- half uncomfortable two hours, Miri realized that she should probblay take Brayan home. The drive home was less awkward, but Brayan seemed to get more and more tense the closer they got to his house. As she pulled into the driveway, he started to say something, choked on it and took a deep breath.
"Doyouthinkwecouldeverybemorethenfriends?"
"I'm sorry, what?" Miri said. Had he just said...? Brayan took a deep breath.
"Do you think we could ever be more then friends?" he said a little more slowly.
Without even thinking, Miri leaned over a gave him a gentle kiss on the lips. He hesitated, then kissed her back.
Something was going off in Miri's head. All she could thnk about was how great Brayan smelled, how soft his hair was, and what a great kisser he was. She barely believed that it was really happening. To her. Quite a night she was having. First compleately getting rid of Josh, and preforming onstage, and now her first kiss and with the most amazing guy she had ever met. Wow.
"Does that answer your question?" Miri said, smillimg.
"I don't know... maybe I need a refresher" he said laughing.
He gave er a quick peck on the lips, then hopped out of the car.
"See you later." he said.
Miri watched as he walked up to the front door and rang the door bell to get in. Lori answered the door and gave him a curious look. She glanced over, and seeing that Miri was still in the driveway, started waving.
"BYE MIRI!" Lori hollered.
Miri gave her a wave, then backed out of the driveway to go home and ponder what had just happened.
