How to celebrate being 50

Loki brought breakfast into my bedroom, yesterday morning, serving me scrambled eggs, blueberry yogurt and perfect coffee.

I messed around the house for a while, fretting over packing for an over-night in Winston-Salem. Once here, I continued the festivities with a massage from Nikki at 6th Sense Health and Wellness Center followed by a nap. Cocktail hour was a glass of Artesa 2007 Chardonnay

Bernardin's has obnoxious music on the site that I can't short circuit. The restaurant is located in the historic Zevely House on Fourth Street in Winston-Salem. The photos on the site are from the old location. The Zevely House is a beautiful old house with lovely gardens that make outside dining in cooler weather look very enjoyable. It was warm enough last night that we opted to eat inside. This allowed us to see paintings by Alix Hitchcock.

Our choices were lobster gazpacho, a column of heirloom tomatoes perched on a ring off eggplant with mozzarella, pine nuts and a very nice balsamic vinaigrette, curried grouper with eggplant served on jasmine rice with a drizzle of mint aoili, sautéed scallops with a chipotle aoili, peach and raspberry cobbler with praline ice cream and chocolate cups with white chocolate mousse and strawberry sauce drizzled all over the plate. They drizzle a lot at Bernardin's. Wines were Dyed in the Wool Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough, NZ, very grapefruity nose, typical grassiness but mildly flavored) and Waterbrook chardonnay.

After dinner, we strolled around town, had coffees at Krankies and stopped in a bar on Trade Street near a/perture and had a little whiskey. MacAllan 12 year old scotch for him; Basil Hayden's small batch Kentucky bourbon for me.

Amazingly, neither of us got tipsy.

Happy birthday to me :-D
