Grueling Triathlon of Doom, Part 2

Feb 18, 2009 06:35

So, I've signed up. Grueling Triathlon of Doom And I gotta relearn how to swim.

I know I can float and paddle around and the Doom only requires that much. You can use a kick board if you need it. But, I want to use this as an inspiration to get other parts of my body in better shape. I'm not particularly intimidated by the walking and I expect the biking to be relatively stress-free. That's because I've already been doing some of those. I have never done laps in a pool, unless they happened when I was taking swimming class when I was a kid.

I'm expecting the swimming to improve my cardiovascular system and my breathing without punishing my knees.

To this end, I am not going to renew my membership at New Millennium Fitness in Mebane. Instead, I am going to join the YMCA in Burlington. It is a moderate detour on the way home, not as convenient as NMF, but not bad. And they have pool fees included in the lower membership price. NMF was going to cost an additional $240/year to use the pool.

They have yoga classes, too. You buy a card with 8 punches on it fr $40 and then take that many classes at your convenience, whether you go twice a week or once a month is your choice. I will be adding yoga for stretching at some point.

And Pilates to strengthen my torso. Eventually, I intend to have a collection of activities that generally get my whole body stronger. I don't have a huge desire to be a big, buff, body builder, but I want to feel good in my skin. I want to get older with as little misery as possible.

One thing at the time, though.

Starting with swimming.
