I was perusing this site filled with lists and statistics and came across the gender issues page with information of things like gender equality and gay rights statistics. I took particular interest in a chart outlining pay rates over a number of years comparing gender and education level.
I don't claim to be an outright feminist, but always thought i was fairly informed on the outcome of women's rights movements of the past and was doing my part, as a woman, to uphold the modern standards of equality.
I grew up being told by liberal media and mothers that men out-earned women, but somehow came to believe that (pardon the pun), it had become an old wive's tale; that women had fought and won, and had secured equality. According to this chart, a man with a doctorate degree earns more than $1000/month more than a woman with the same credentials.
Median annual incomeIs it reasonable that although I haven't signed any such petitions or took part in any such rallies or court cases i feel defeated just reading this? I guess it warrants a feeling of hopelessness. I hadn't aspired to get my doctorate, per se, but had i wanted it, i could go home each day knowing that at least one of my colleagues was better compensated for his time and effort on the job.
Ninety one years after getting the vote (in Canada) and we're still being nickel and dimed out of fair treatment.
