Cassie's open heart surgery: take two

Apr 23, 2008 03:32

It was D day. Well no, not D day because D could stand for… you know. It was S day. S for surgery.

She’d said her goodbyes… stuff to her family and friends and she was wheeled down the hall.

“Don’t worry, Cassie.” Dr. Sondheim reassured her. “You’ll wake up and this will be done before you know it.”

“I remember.” Cassie had to close her eyes to keep from staring at the rapidly moving ceiling. Then she realized she might not see anything after that and opened them again, choosing to focus on the faces of the nurses around her, covered by their masks. These people would be seeing the insides of her body soon enough.

Maybe her feet would be a safe thing to look at?

“And remember when you wake up you’ll have the ventilator so try not to-”

“I remember that too.”

There was a pause while the nurses opened the door to the room.

Cassie knew that in all probability she was going to come out of this room. But the thought that there was a chance she might not.

“It’s all right. I’ll take care of you.” Dr. Sondheim said.

Cassie tried not to shake when they put the IV in. And in a few moments that was that.

About six hours later Cassie didn’t wake so much as become slightly aware she wasn’t waiting for surgery anymore. And despite the pain killers there was a sharp, stabbing pain in her chest. But somehow it was rather hard to care as she drifted in and out of consciousness, barely noticing the difference between the two states.

It was going to be a long, long road to recovery.
