WHO ARE THE YOUNG AVENGERS?
Teen Heroes Draw Praise and Criticism

New York Over the past several weeks, New Yorkers have reported seeing a team of teenaged vigilantes, with costumes reminiscent of various Avengers. But their resemblance to Avengers do not seem limited to their costumes, but also extend to their powers. From the armored suit of the self-titled "Iron Lad" to the large green "Hulkling," the lightning-using "Asgardian" to the star-spangled "Patriot," a size-changing "Stature" to two yet-unnamed members armed with bows and super-speed, this group of teenagers has been seen several times across town. Last night, they were seen rescuing residents of the Seacrest Apartments, which was blazing out of control. Firefighters praised the young team's bravery, but also called for civilians not to risk their lives in such manners. "It is true that all residents were safely rescued before firefighters could arrive, but this was nothing short of a miracle," said Fire Marshall James Tanner. "If they had managed to trap themselves in the fire, it could have seriously complicated rescue attempts."
But this was not the first appearance of these teenage heroes. The streets are filled with rumors of sightings of the underage vigilantes, and police reports indicate that several suspected drug-dealers, rapists, and muggers wanted for questioning or arrest have been delivered to the police by these so-called Young Avengers. They botched a rescue of a hostage situation at St. Patrick's Cathedral, during the wedding of the eldest daughter of industrialist Derek Bishop.
But the most questionable activity is their rumored involvement in an attempted breakout at a top security prison in Springfield, New Jersey. Authorities confirm that no prisoners escaped, but it appears these Young Avengers attempted to release one of the prisoners for reasons unknown. The Young Avengers were (continued on Page 12A)
