I like to put stuff in my books (YA/MG fantasy) that will sail over the top of the heads of their intended audiences.  I always believe that there are lots of adults who read "kid" books, so I like to have something fun for the old folks to discover ( Read more... )

These are fun to do! Some folks who do this really well are the people who make Pixar movies. In Toy Story, when the house went up for sale, the sign out front said "Virtual realty." And the toolbox that Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) was trying to move to save Woody said "Binford Tools." For several years Tim Allen played a guy who did a cable TV show sponsored by Binford Tools.
