Cultural References

I like to put stuff in my books (YA/MG fantasy) that will sail over the top of the heads of their intended audiences.  I always believe that there are lots of adults who read "kid" books, so I like to have something fun for the old folks to discover.

It's interesting that my critiquers (mostly adults) quite often miss the references as well.  Or, they're noticing them, but don't comment.

Here are a few references I've included. Would you know where they're from?

A chapter titled "A Failure to Communicate" (yeah, that's an easy one)

A character claiming to be from the Grand Duchy of Fenwick.

A magical device called a foldbox.

A martial art called Twisting developed on the planet Helicon.

A witch wondering whether a frog under a log was as good as a toad under a stone.

Well, you get the idea.  Do you do this in your writing?  What are some of your favorites from your books or stories?
