Title: Through the Flame - for xaefryl
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Cross faction... kinda.
Pairings: Barricade x Bumblebee
Characters: Barricade, Bumblebee, mention of Prowl, Soundwave, Shockwave, Starscream and Megatron.
Summary: Bumblebee forces Barricade to question where his loyalties lay now that Megatron is gone.
Notes: This was originally going to be a response to xaefryl's request in my requests post under the prompt of 'comfort', but this turned out to be not very... comforting, and it's not making much sense which probably means I need to wake up some more. So, since it's not really fitting the prompt, let's leave it as a gift for the wonderful xaefryl (Hope you feel better soon, hun!). This is based around my Cold/Warm series. Now, if you excuse me, I have an Irish folk-dancing Thundercracker to attend to.

"It would be easier if you just joined us." Bumblebee gave a passing look to the dilapidated warehouse which Barricade choose to use as hiding place.

"I am not going to join the Autobots, brat. Stop that already." While his Lord Megatron was gone and his pledge towards the Decepticon cause didn't extend to neither Soundwave nor Starscream, Barricade wasn't eager to just drop the insignia and go around calling himself an Autobot. Though, Bumblebee suspected his reasons to turn down the offer had to do with a certain other Autobot, namely, Prowl.

"Sooner or later you'll have to face him properly, you know?" the Camaro leaned against one of the pillars that maintained the structure in one piece.

"That's none of your concern, brat," the Saleen interceptor growled but turned his gaze to Bumblebee. "I think he made his point very clear, anyway. I'm just his creator, nothing more."

"He said he's not the one you need right now, but I wonder if that's true," Bumblebee pushed himself away from the pillar and took a couple of tentative steps towards the Decepticon. "Megatron is gone. Starscream disappeared. Soundwave is too far away even from Cybertron. We don't know a thing about Shockwave. Tell me, what are you going to do now, Barricade? Will you hide here all this time? Licking your wounds?"

"Starscream will be back," Barricade replied with grim certainty.

"And when he comes back, what will you do, Barricade?" the scout pressed, taking another step towards the Interceptor.

"My obligation was towards Lord Megatron. I owe no loyalties to anyone but him," Barricade answered honestly, he had no intention to pledge alliance to Starscream in the same way he had for Megatron.

"Stop dancing around the question. What will you do?" Bumblebee asked patiently once more, reveling in the feeling of uncertainty exuded by the police cruiser.

"I won't ally to Starscream."

"You don't want to fight him, do you?" If Bumblebee had the mouth plates for it, he would have smiled. When Barricade addressed a puzzled look at him, the Autobot scout pressed a finger against the Decepticon's chest. "Prowl. You don't want to fight your own offspring, especially for someone you're not willing to be terminated for, namely, Starscream."

"That's nonsense," deciding he was tired of playing the mouse role in this game, Barricade took hold of the Camaro's wrist, pulling him closer until their faces were just inches from one another. His optics narrowed. "If Megatron ordered so--"

"But Megatron is not here anymore. You're afraid because now you have the freedom to choose your battles, and up until now you never had that freedom," Bumblebee's optics softened as he reached up to touch the sharp plates that composed Barricade's face. "You have the freedom to actually approach what your previous alliance denied you."

"Prowl would never accept me, if that's what you're implying." Barricade flinched at the touch but did not back away from it, so unused to feel a touch so pleasant and caring.

"He will, if you give him time," Bumblebee brushed his face lightly against the side of the Decepticon's face, in the closest he could pass for a kiss. "If you don't wish to join the Autobots I can respect that, but at least let me know where you stand in this conflict now."

"Would you raise your weapon against me if I decided to join Starscream?" Barricade's hold around Bumblebee's wrist tightened just a little.

"Without a doubt."

Barricade smiled and wrapped his free arm around the Autobot scout, pulling him closer. "I don't belong among the Autobots, but rest assured, brat, I have no intention to ally myself to Starscream, Shockwave or Soundwave."

Bumblebee nodded in understanding and trailed his free hand over the edge of Barricade's chest plate. He was content enough knowing Barricade choose to remain neutral, although he knew if Starscream or Shockwave appeared on Earth, leading the remaining Decepticon forces, Barricade wouldn't be safe. Decepticons did not accept things such as neutrals, and if that happened, sooner or later Barricade would have to choose a side again. The Autobot scout hoped this time, however, the conflict would set them on the same side of the fence.
