Moving Day

Tonight I am moving all of my Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches out of their plastic cage into Lizzy's old hamster cage, which is an old glass fish tank with a screen mesh cover.

I admit, my handling of the baby cockroaches that arrived on the scene a couple of months ago has been a disaster. Despite my "best" efforts, I was fooling myself over how easily the babies could escape through the slots in the plastic cage.

As a result, they have ended up at different times in different locations throughout the house, and I can't even mention roaches now to Kat because she is so fed up with the whole thing (one baby roach even survived the wash cycle on one of Kat's dresses--she was not pleased).

And Sally has mentioned many times how sad it is that I have brought roaches into our house and I can't even properly take care of them, which is really an obligation on a pet owner no matter what kind of pet they have. When you bring an animal into your care, you really have a moral obligation to properly take care of it.

So I am guilty, guilty, guilty!

My last attempt at an escape-proof cage was to surround the roach cage on the inside with screening like you use for windows, and that seems to have prevented escapes, but I do not think the roaches are particularly happy (they are not softly hissing to each other at night as much as they used to), because it has reduced their living space and I think they have trouble walking on the screening.

So a much humbled me (with apologies to both my family and to the roaches) will put the roaches into a (hopefully!!) escape-proof and roach-and-family-friendly cage tonight!
