I have known of people who go away to their first semester of college and go nuts and wild, and end up flunking out or just barely passing  I guess freedom can be a powerful drug for those who feel they need to express themselves so, with their first real chance to make independent choices ( Read more... )

Awww...I love how supportive a Daddy you are!

Working in an academic environment, I sure see my share of those party animals that you described. Sad to watch. Glad that your daughter is such an exception!

I've found that the people who fall prey to the "Freshman Freak Out" the worst are those who came from suppressive family environments where more emphasis was placed on arbitrary rules then supportive structure.

Teens who are secure and relaxed in their environment don't generally feel a need to rebel against it. :)

Edit: Whoops! That was supposed to be a response to the main post, not sure how it ended up under a comment!

I know someone who freaked out who came from exactly the suppressive family environment you mention....

And on another note, hope you have a very Happy New Year! :)

Thanks! She met up with a group of her high school friends last week, and she said they all seemed happy and quite "together" upon their return from their first semesters! So that is very nice to see, too! :)

Oh yay!!! There's another college student like me out in the world! I'm not alone in my level-headedness! Wow... that sounded way more conceited than I meant it to. I'm glad Kat's getting so much out of college and is enjoying herself without rebelling against everything she's ever known. I think that is probably real credit to you and your wife as well as her.

Heartwarming news about Kat:) It's great when relief turns to confident pride in your offspring, isn't it?! Encouraging too that the college took swift action to remedy the situation re. French tuition. It's reassuring to realise that their monitoring is effective and responsive.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas:)

Congratulations to Kat. Sounds like you did a great job raising her. It is so nice to see how our kids grow up and mature after a bit of time on their own.
I love your hedge hog icon! I used to have a hedgie as a pet. Loved her dearly. Wonderful creatures.

Thanks!

Hedgehogs are indeed very cute! Maybe someday Lizzy might have one! (She likes and has had small hamsters, but realizes that for now she does not have the time and inclination to take care of one, which is a good thing to realize! :)
