Recently I've started going to
Live in HD opera screenings instead of going to the Metropolitan Opera in person and I have to say... I love them. My first screening was Gounod's Faust in January:
Joyce Didonato (Sycorax from The Enchanted Island) interviewed Jonas Kaufmann before the intermission:
Faust was really interesting! I was surprised at how much emphasis was placed on Marguerite in this production, but maybe I'm just too used to the Marlowe and Goethe versions of Faust.
Next I saw Wagner's Gotterdammerung. ::dies:: I've never seen Wagner before, but now I can't wait to see his other works!
Here's a sneaky photo I took of the Rhinemaidens in their slinky suits:
The music carried me away and the performances, set, and costumes were unbelievable-- it was six hours of joy. And now I want a Norn robe.
My conclusions about the Met's Live in HD performances are as follows...
Negatives:
movie theaters lack the swanky interiors of the Met
Positives:
good sound
excellent view every time
easy to read subtitles up on the screen
proximity to my house
affordable ($19 for Faust, $24 for Gotterdammerung)
you can eat and drink during the performance
the bathrooms in the Cinemark 16 look like this ~
