Dicotomy of Naps

How come when everyone else in the world takes a nap or siesta, they wake up revitalized or at the very least feeling a little bit better, but when i try to take a nap I end up feeling dizzy, sick to my stomach, and always considerably worse than I felt when I initially lay down?  It's like everyone else can do this thing that makes them feel ( Read more... )

I know if I try to take too short of a nap, I end up like that. I guess the nap has to be the perfect length...not too long, and not too short.

I never take naps for that reason--I NEVER feel better.

Out of curiosity, did you ever take naps? As a kid, apparently I always resisted the concept of an afternoon nap, so I think that may be partially why it doesn't help now.

Try listening to a meditation tape while you nap. Your mind is too busy with stuff and you aren't getting real rest. So one of the tapes or CDs could help.

Yes, they call them digital drugs now, and that's a dumb marketing name. Almost as dumb as lawmakers threatening to ban it. (Banning a sound?) All it is is a pair of tones at slightly different frequencies. The brain is wired to listen for the beats the two frequencies make. But if the tones are in the different ears, there is no beat frequency. So the brain invents one internally, and this faux beat generation causes the brain to go into more relaxed states.

Look in my FA for "Digital Drugs" for a demo, albiet a boring one.

I got back to playing soothing music to sleep. I think it helps.

I favor Native American flute and some "new age" stuff like Enya or Yanni since it has musical merit.

Long before "digital drugs", Raymond Scott experimented with machine generated music and soothing sounds. If only we could find all his recordings :-( Yes, the Raymond Scott that Carl Stalling rediscovered for all the Looney Tunes soundtracks.

I can't take a nap while hungry or I will wake up dizzy, weak and headachy.

Also it seems that if I have to take a nap it has to be about an hour and a half in length, so I can go through the Stage 1-3 and REM sleep cycles or I wake up really groggy and out of it.

Otherwise a nap usually does me some good.

My wife can take a 20 minute power nap and wake up feeling wonderful. Her mother is the same way. For me.. a nap has to be at least 3-4 hours or I feel worse when I wake up than when I went to sleep.
