I've seen 3 in the past month or so and have been meaning to post, but today finally got me motivated.

First, I went to see The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D. That was really enjoyable again. I liked it the first time, and in 3D it was fun. Plus the music in that movie is just awesome.

I decided to go see Beowulf as that is something I should like. I didn't realize it was being released in a 3D and regular version, and ended up going to the 3D version. It was all right, but I don't really enjoy that style of animation much. I don't think animation has to mimic reality so much and it annoys me that I can tell it is not reality but trying to be. Still the movie was enjoyable.

Today, I decided to take a little time in the afternoon since I'm working the Tokyo shift hours for work right now and go to see The Golden Compass My friend zanybrain has already posted about going to see it and being impressed and she was right. Wow. I'm a pretty big fan of the 3 books; this is the first turned into a movie, or most of the first, and it was really well done. The visuals are great. And Dakota Blue Richards did an impressive job as Lyra, I thought. It was funny that Lee Scoresby turned out to look an awful lot like Samuel Clemens to me. Still, that was minor stuff. The polar bears and the handling of the "daemons" in the movie (not evil creatures) was quite well done and very important to the feel of the books. It certainly wasn't just a faithful adaptation of the book, but I thought they did a good job given time and other constraints of movie-making. Probably my favorite movie of the year.
