Chapter Seven Hayloft
Luke escaped from Reid by going to the farm. He went to the pond and stared out at the water. He ingnored the messages and texts on his phone. He would talk to Reid later, when he calmed down. The thought of Alec's lips on Reid's lips, and the thought of all the sex they once had...it killed Luke. He could tell, from what he walked into at the hospital, that Alec was the aggressor, not Reid. But Luke couldn't help but wonder if Reid had liked the kiss. If it made him want his old lover back, even for a moment.
"Luke?"
Luke turned to see Noah standing near him.
"Hey," Luke tried to smile, " I heard you came back."
Noah laughed self-consciously, "LA just seemed to big and cold to me. Without anybody by my side."
Luke flinched. Noah could still make him feel guilty just by being Noah.
"I'm sorry," he said automatically, and then could kick himself for his slip. He was done with this kind of toxic behaviour, wasn't he?
He glanced at Noah. "What brings you out here? " Luke asked.
"Can't I even visit you?" Noah complained.
"No, yeah - of course, " Luke couldn't bare to hurt his feelings. "Noah, you are always welcome."
Noah smiled. "Thanks. What brought me out was I had a strange encounter with a guy at Java. His name is Alec?"
"What did he want?" Luke asked.
Noah shrugged. "To tell me all about him and Reid. They were lovers. " Noah's eyes studied Luke's. Luke only shrugged. "Apparently, " Noah went on, "Reid got bored when it became too serious and he cheated on Alec. "
Luke frowned, "That doesn't sound like Reid."
"Well, maybe it is like him. He is a perfectionist type. Alec said when the relationship became too intense for him, he went out and cheated...Several times."
"Why are you telling me this?" Luke snapped.
"I'm just trying to look out for you. " Noah went over to Luke. "I still care about you. Reid is a jerk , he - "
"Enough. Didn't we do this with the Chris thing months ago? Noah, Reid is my boyfriend now. Okay. Drop it."
Noah held out his hands. "Fine."
They were silent.
"I really think you should give LA another chance, " Luke said finally. "There is nothing for you here."
After Noah left, Luke went to the farm and fed the horses. He tried not to let Noah's comments fill his head. Holden opened up the bar door and smiled.
"Hey dad."
"Hey, Luke. I didn't know you were here."
"Just felt like it." Luke shrugged.
"Oh?" Holden raised his eyebrows at him. "Having trouble with Reid?"
"Am I so obvious?" Luke laughed and then sighed. "We had a fight of sorts."
"Well, I don't want to pry," Holden said slowly.
"Reid's new doctor, " Luke confided, " he came into town with his brother. His brother used to date Reid and..." Luke decided not to mention the kiss he had walked in on. He knew Reid could be uncomfortable with his family as it was.
"Well, son. Everybody has a past. Did Reid say he cared about this guy?"
"No. " Luke pouted, "But they were together."
"Luke," Holden advised, "trust Reid."
"Really? I thought you and mom didn't really even like him."
Holden grinned, "Well, he is different. But he grows on a person. And he deeply cares for you. Everybody can see that. "
Luke smiled reluctantly.
"Listen," Holden said, "Can you do me a favor since you are here anyway?"
"Sure."
"Can you clean up the stalls and then lock up? Nobody else is home and I have a few errands in town to run."
"Not a problem."
Holden smiled, "You are a great son." He smiled at Luke and then left.
As Holden got itno his car, he quickly dialed Reid's number. Luke might hate him for meddling but... Holden hated to see his son unhappy. He had just glowed for weeks and weeks being with Reid. Holden didn't think meddling this one time would matter. ..
Luke was sweeping out the stalls when the door opened . He turned, half-expecting that Holden had forgotten something. Reid stood there. He looked ridiculously out of place in a barn. He stood in his scrubs and took in the sight of Luke, shirtless and sweaty. Reid gulped hard and stared down at his feet.
"Why are you here?"
"Why are you ignoring all my calls?"
Reid moved closer to Luke. "It wasn't anything, " he said softly.
"I know he was coming on to you," Luke said.
"Yes."
"And I know you were not kissing him back."
"But?' Reid said.
Luke frowned. His eyes became tear-filled. "It hurt me anyhow. "
"Sorry," Reid touched Luke gently on the shoulder.
"Did you cheat on him?" Luke asked suddenly.
Reid frowned and stepped back. "What? Where is that coming from?"
"Did you?"
"Why do you think that?"
Luke glanced away. He could hardly say that Noah told him.
"I would just go crazy if you ever cheated on me," Luke said finally. He wouldn't meet Reid's eyes.
"Well, I wouldn't cheat. I don't cheat. If I want to end things then I end them." Reid said matter-of factly.
Luke thought about Holden's warning to trust in Reid.
"Okay,' Luke whispered.
"Okay?' Reid asked.
"Yeah," Luke nodded.
Reid moved closer to Luke again. "Alec meant nothing, " he offered, " but I never cheated on him. "
Luke nodded again.
Reid smiled. He leaned in and gave Luke a long kiss.
"You look pretty sexy, farm boy," Reid said, his eyes twinkling.
Luke laughed. "What is sexy? The smell of horse manure or hay?"
Reid shrugged. "Maybe. Maybe you in those tight jeans, no shirt, and your pretty hair is messy for once."
"You know, hay is actually kind of soft. " Luke pointed up the barn stairs to the clean bales of hay.
Then Luke smiled at Reid, "Ever rolled in the hay, doctor?"
Reid shook his head. His eyes devouring Luke.
Luke grinned saucily, "It's practically a Synder tradition."
He grabbed for Reid. Their tongues met in a frantic kiss. Reid tangled his fingers in Luke's hair . He then touched Luke's bare neck and shoulders. His skin felt hot to touch. Reid touched Luke's cheek.
Luke pulled Reid to his feet. He glanced down at Reid still naked body. "You love me, " Luke said .
Reid nodded. "True. " Then he became embarrassed and rolled his eyes. "God, i've become such a sap."
"Awww, " Luke teased, glowing and happy again. "poor you. No more tough guy."
"Yes, " Reid sighed. "Be gentle with me. " Then he grinned. "But not too gentle."
"Reid?"
"Hmm?"
"You have hay in your hair."
Reid became flustered and lifted a finger to his head.
"Terrific," Reid muttered, "everybody will suspect I was making out in a hayloft."
He ran his fingers through his curly locks. "Is it out?"
Luke just smiled. It wasn't , but he liked the idea of Reid going back to work with some hay in his hair. Let Alec and everybody else know. This man belonged to him!
