Hi all,
PSA time: it looks like Sarah's journal has been hacked, probably by the same people who did hacks on a couple other prominent blogs and communities earlier this year. Don't click any of the links in her latest post ("New book available!"), I'll find links in a sec to explain what is going on, I just feel like this should probably go up for a warning if any of you (like me) are super tempted and not thinking too clearly due to it being a bit late.
ETA: Here is some more useful info on it from previous occurances,
This one by
acari is pretty general purpose and has some info on how to protect yourself from this kind of hack.
This one is
copperbadge 's account of when something like this happened to him.
And
this one by
upstart_crow is a description of another incident.
And all of them have some good links to other explanations and things, particularly
acari 's.
Finally, I have already emailed Sarah and am currently filing an LJ complaint about it; we probably shouldn't flood Sarah's inbox, especially if she may or may not (hopefully so!) have control of her email, and LJ Abuse has been alerted and probably doesn't need to be, er, re-alerted.
ETA 2: For those of you on Windows machines who clicked, my techie friend recommends
Spybot S&D for tracking down and killing any keyloggers you may've downloaded accidentally. If people in comments have other things they prefer/for Macs I can put that up here as well.
SON OF THE ETA: Down
here, Sarah comments:
Hi everyone.
I see you guys are wonderfully on top of things, but just to let you know.
I *was* protected, I thought, against all such horribleness, but someone seems to have hacked into my business gmail and through it to my livejournal. So nobody trust any emails from sarahreesbrennan@gmail.com.
The timing looks pretty suspicious, as well. Thoughts are it's someone from fandom, faking it to look like Sam's and Jaida's attack.
I am pretty distraught, and I was on the fainting couch about the book already, really, so: picture me as art of some kind. Woman In Hysterics. And Fluffy Pink Towel.
Thanks for all of the kind words,
Sarah RB
So fingers, toes, etc. crossed that LJ Abuse can work this one out.
