It had happened again.
Somehow weeks had gone by since Lavender and Marlow had managed a day to see each other. She didn't understand how it had happened, somehow both of their schedules working completely against them. But there was so much to talk about and so much to catch up on- and Lavender was pregnant for Merlin's sake. Surely Lavender had

Of course that might have been possible but Lavender hadn't been sleeping much at all.
She hadn't been doing much at all really except laying in bed and idly flipping through television channels while her wand did all of the remaining packing work for her.
So when there was a knock at the door she pulled herself off of the couch, her hair messily pulled up into a bun and Roger's clothes hanging off of her, to go answer it. It didn't even cross her mind that somebody might come looking for her, the only person she'd been in contact with since the weekend was her husband and Cecilia, not having the heart or the strength to reach out on her own.
"Marlow- oh, hey-" she said groggily, not even bothering trying to force a smile. Her best friend would have seen right through it anyway. "Come in-"

The look on Lavender's face was hard to miss. It wasn't the state of dress. Typically, seeing her best friend in Roger's clothes, hair piled on her head- it wasn't much of a shock. Girl liked to get comfortable when she could. But that look- that sort of quiet, zoned out look, the unmistakable sadness- that was very uncharacteristic of Lavender.
She figured the chocolate would be put to a different use now.
"You alright?" she asked, features softening as she stepped inside the flat.

There really was no easy way to answer that question, no way to work around it with out flat out lying and Lavender never lied to her best friend.
"I um- I had a miscarriage," she told her slowly, her voice soft and maybe even a little bit far away. It didn't actually feel like she was talking about herself.
"The baby- um well, the baby's gone."

Marlow stood frozen, her eyes focused on Lavender, barely blinking. The immediate crushing feeling she felt was enough to push her forward, Marlow reaching instinctively for Lavender, wrapping her arms around her best friend tightly.
"Bloody hell, Lav, I am so sorry-" she said.
This was the last thing Lavender needed, especially after the attack and how it affected her body. Marlow had hoped that the pregnancy would be the end of all of that.

"Thanks. It's only been a couple of days," she told her lamely, not really knowing what else to say about the whole thing.
It had all happened so fast really and she had slept through most of it, waking up to pains in her stomach but nothing else seemed out of the ordinary until she removed the covered.
"I didn't even have to stay over night."

How do you even respond to something like that?
"I'm so sorry I didn't know-" she said, shaking her head. "What can I do? How are you feeling?"
Reply
"I don't really feel anything right now," she told her, going for honesty instead.
If there was somebody else she didn't have to fake it for besides Roger then it was going to be Marlow, who had seen her sink lower than Lavender was proud of.
"It hurts- you know, physically. Or it did that night-"

She didn't quite know what to say. She knew there was probably nothing really worth saying that would make it better. She chewed down on the inside of her cheek as she looked back to Lavender.
"Come on, let's get curled up then," she said, reaching her hand for her. "You can talk or you can say nothing, but I'll be here, alright?"
She shrugged.
"I've also got chocolate?"

"Yeah, okay. That sounds good," she told her, lacing her fingers through Marlow's the way that they used to do when they were younger and their problems weren't so devastating.
They made their way over the couch, filled with extra pillows and her favorite blanket spilling over onto the floor.
"Why don't you just talk. Tell me what's been going on-"

As they reached the couch, Marlow curling up against a rather large, cushy throw pillow, she looked over to Lavender with a furrowed brow.
"Oh- no," she said, shaking her head. "That's alright- why won't we just find something terrible on the telly?"
She didn't think it'd be at all alright to start talking about Zacharias when Lavender was like this.

That seemed to be becoming a habit for them now, falling in and out of funks with out letting the other know.
They really had to stop doing that.
"No, are you sure?" she asked, tucking her legs up underneath her. "Or we can talk about- well, anything else?"

Even after all this time.
"Well, if you must know," she said, feeling oddly anxious about this. "I've sort of gotten myself a boyfriend?"
Maybe the distraction would be good.

"Have you?" she asked, hugging a pillow to her chest.
Boy talk would always be a top priority conversation no matter how old they got.
"Which guy won out in the end?"

"I dunno if it was ever a contest-" she said, though her thoughts drifted back toward Patrick for a moment. Merlin, he'd been brilliant- it just.. sort of fizzled?
She hesitated a moment before finally, "It's actually Riah- he and I um, well we're together- officially-"
She felt a bit of a pitter patter in her heart just thinking about it.

And before Riley there had been Zacharias.
It was only a matter of time before they finally gave it a decent shot.
"Tell me how that happened," she told her, not quite smiling but her voice was a little bit lighter.
"I'm sure it's a great story."

She laughed, resting her head against Lavender's as she thought back to that day. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had fun on Valentine's Day, the holiday something Riley abhorred (and while she didn't care much about it, she certainly wouldn't have minded celebrating every once in a while).
"And well, one thing led to another-" she told her, her voice trailing off. "Which I had planned on? I mean I wore matching lingerie for a reason- It was when things started getting serious that everything shifted-"
