Yesterday I went to see one of my hometown hero bands from high school. North of America. They are reunited to some degree, with new songs (I liked their new pop sound). The show was well attended, the second show in a week for me, first two shows probably all year.
Some people at the show liked the band - people who'd never seen them before. It was weird.
Here's a look at some uncharacteristic things I have branched out to lately...
Wolf Parade's Apologies To The Queen Mary - Sounds like a band going through the motions, but they're new. I like some songs, but mostly it's the songs where the singer chills a bit on the fucking around. Beck is a good singer, this guy sounds like Beck being way too Bowie. Get focused, mane. Best song - "Modern World"
Broken Social Scene's Broken Social Scene - A stompy record. A romp, a hoppy record. It screams indie rock, the beats, the voicings, and especially the maj7 and the 9 chords. Some of it sounds like indie U2. The problem is that the dynamic is all gone...On this record the ballads are replaced with slow burn noise jams. They really improved on their fast songs, but where's the instant-classic slow songs? The song Major Label Debut is on the record as a slow song, and on the enclosed e.p. as a fast song - maybe they were desperate for slow songs, bcz this one is better in fast form. Best song - "Hotel"
Ladytron's Witching Hour - I have always been so skeptical of Ladytron, but this record charms me. It's so similar to their old music, but it goes with the darker thing. Confident, straightforward, and descriptive. Best Song - "Destroy Everything You Touch"
I also got the Go Team record but I haven't listened to it yet.
