5 days before the Battle of Grol starts
5 more days and the Huge Battle of Grol will be relived again.
Grol (now Groenlo) was occupied by the Spanish twice. The First time "we" were freed by Prince Maurits (eldest sun of William Of Orange) 1595 ( or 6 or 7) and then the Spanish came back and occupied Grol again. During that period in 1615 Peter Kuyper started to brew Grolsch Beer for the first time.
In 1627 Prince Frederick Hendrik (Another son of William of Orange and his wife Louise de Couligny) husband of Amalia Von Solms (the first child of Alexander and Maxima is also called Amalia) freed "us" again from the Spanish. Frederick Hendrik needed money (to free other cities) so he made a huge propaganda out of his victory on the Spanish in Grol. There a maps on which Grol looks very huge and important. In fact it was important because this was his first siege, soon others followed and the entire Netherlands were fried from the Spanish.
Anyway... a group of very active volunteers in Groenlo is doing everything to re-enact this little part of history. They do it always as accurate as possible.
Next weekend the huge battle will be relived again, and many people are already busy with the preparations.
There will be coming people from all over the Netherlands, England, Scotland and Czech Republic
to take part in the battle.
Of course Streekgids reports everything. This morning we went to the field of fire to make a video clip. This is the true place where the original battle took place. They found many bullets and shelves. You can hear my voice as well, but I don't think you can make lot of it.
