Yes, I caught crap about it. :D
I'm kicking myself for not digging out what goth gear I still have. In fact, I missed a perfect opportunity to create scandle for Hubby: a few of his coworkers were at the concert. Can you imagine if I had dressed like a goth schoolgirl? "And this is my wife..." lol
The opening band was And One. I really liked them - more new wave than techno. The lead singer is the source of the post title - I laughed so hard when he said it. It might not be the appropriate thing to say but damn, the Germans certainly know how to do techno right.
I was very very impressed with VNV Nation. The last thing I was expecting was to go to a serious techno concert and see a lead singer who looked like a solid mechanic. I was expecting something scrawny and weighing not much more than I do. The band seemed genuine - they love what they do, they love performing, they appreciated their fans and enjoyed being able to interact with the audience. The venue is a small club, maybe two or three hundred folks and they worked the crowd perfectly. While I like the pagentry of big stadium / coliseum shows (Bowie's Glass Spider tour or David Lee Roth's Skyscraper), I really enjoyed the coziness of this show. After months of waking up to "Joy" back in the day (Hubby put VNV in the alarm clock after I told him I was tired of waking up to Lords of Acid "Am I Sexy?" every morning), it was wonderful to see the band live and to enjoy the show.
Some impressions:
A little blonde girl no bigger than me with D-cups that didn't move when she walked. Sure, as a solid hetero, I'm biased but damn, if they don't even sway, they're too fake to be appreciated.
A fellow with Blondie's profile caught my eye. He had dark hair rather than blond with a hairstyle that was clearly the result of an accident with a bottle of Elmers Glue and a wind tunnel. More than that, however, was the 3" barbell horizontally piercing his upper lip, looking in the halflight of the theater like a steel pencil thin mustache.
VNV had Ronan out front, with Mark playing electro drums behind him and two keyboardists standing on each side of Mark (keyboards and laptops on stands). The first song, all three were bouncing on their toes, keeping time to the music, in unison both in timing and style. I love that watching people move together like that.
