6: do you keep plants?
I keep the idea of plants. I live primarily in the basement of the house we rent so it's a bit difficult to keep anything that needs sun down here. We also don't really have room for anything upstairs. Mom has a type of cactus that's all leafy (I think it's a cactus because it doesn't require frequent waterings--or maybe it's a leafy palm? I don't remember now) and in the summer sometimes we have some flower planters but that's not my area.
A couple summers I tried to keep some tomato plants and dreamed of making those pinterest garden boxes with old wooden pallets but, like, that would require following through on a momentary crazy desire to go through all the effort. If we keep any planters on the front deck they all end up jumping off multiple times a summer so it's just not worth it.
I tried out a dessert recipe tonight and prepped for another I'll have to do in the next couple of days. I came across these recipes through Buzzfeed, I'm sure. The one I made tonight only involved stirring some honey and vanilla into a container of greek yogurt (not just trying it on its own or adding it to tuna, thankfully!), then spreading it on some parchment on a baking sheet. Then I sprinkled some granola, sliced almonds and a handful of chocolate chips and popped the pan in the freezer. Ideally, if this works the way it SHOULD, I'll have some frozen yogurt bark tomorrow.
The other recipe involves sweet potato so I boiled one tonight so it'll be well cooled off for when I need to use it. I found a recipe using mashed sweet potato to make brownies. It calls for maple syrup, which I bought last week, nut butter and cocoa powder as well so it's a SUPER simple recipe. The pictures in the blog post I have saved look well and fine but I have low-to-middling success with these fancy attempts at "pinterest-y" things so I guess it's a wait and see situation.
I finally got around to watching all four episodes of Riverdale today. I think the hype made me expect a bit more from the show but I like what I saw. It had shades of some other teen-based dramas from the 90's/early-noughties and reminds me of them more than a lot of other similar shows out right now.
For instance, Archie's relationship with Miss Grundy felt so Pacey-in-season-1 of Dawson's Creek. The way the RD plotline just of fizzled with relatively minimal fallout reminded me so much of Pacey's similar story. The layered character reveals that each play into the overall murder storyline is SO Veronica Mars but in an optimistically good way. I mean, VM had its own issues once equally-gripping seasons had to be plotted so there's a lot that could go south in RD, but the first four episodes have set up an intriguing mystery for sure.
I think the part I have the more difficulty with wrapping my head around is Cheryl Blossom's character. Like, I get there are self-centered, vapid people in the world but she's walking a thin line between character and caricature right now. This part reminds me of Popular which I only watched one of two seasons of because it was so boring to me. Anyway, Cheryl reminds me of Mary Cherry from that show. However, Popular was a satirical dramedy, whereas RD is straight drama with some lighter moments.
Mädchen Amick chews the scenery hardcore any moment she's on screen. I can't tell if she's supposed to be hyper-religious or just incredibly quick to use it as a convenient defence whenever she does something that's glaringly un-Godlike. I also find either the actor playing Kevin Keller, or maybe how he was written/told to come across, as very overly-exaggerated. I'm hoping it'll come down a few notches as the episodes go by and the actors settle more into their roles.
Good enough for me to keep going but I won't be upset if I allow a few episodes at a time to pile up so I can binge them.
